Custodian Position

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across Dillard University's campus, including academic buildings, administrative offices, residence halls, and public spaces. This position is an essential personnel position that supports the University's mission as the Jewel of Gentilly by ensuring facilities reflect the highest standards of care, cleanliness, and pride.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Detailed cleaning of classrooms, offices, common areas, stairways, handrails, elevators, corridors, lobbies and public restrooms.
• Detailed cleaning of residence halls common areas, dormitory private bathrooms, (sinks, toilets, mirrors, tubs and showers), corridors, lobbies, public restrooms, stairways, handrails, elevators, and other building spaces.
• Deep cleaning required quarterly between semesters in Residence Halls and in classroom facilities.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, sanitize high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, door handles, push plates, light switches, stairways, handrails, elevator buttons and both interior and exterior building entrance surfaces to maintain high standards of hygiene.
• Clean and service restrooms, ensuring proper sanitization and replenishment of supplies; clean metal fixtures and fittings.
• Wash walls, windows, window sills, blinds, glass, doors, woodwork, furniture and fixtures; scrub, mop, wax and polish floors.
• Clean and shampoo rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.
• Collect and dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste in designated areas; empty and clean trash containers.
• Assist with the setup, breakdown, and cleaning of event and meeting spaces.
• Operate mechanized cleaning equipment; maintain custodial equipment and supplies in a safe and orderly condition.
• Perform minor maintenance (e.g., replacing light bulbs, reporting needed repairs).
• Submit work order reports when facilities are not functioning properly.
• Support emergency and special assignments, such as storm preparation, inclement weather duties, and campus event support.
• Maintain high standards of customer service in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous custodial, janitorial, or facility cleaning experience preferred.
• Knowledge of proper cleaning practices, sanitation standards, and safe handling of chemicals and equipment.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods.
• Dependability, punctuality, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Commitment to upholding the image and mission of Dillard University.

Work Environment

• Work performed in classrooms, offices, residence halls, and outdoor areas as assigned.
• May be exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, odors, and noise from equipment.
• Requires flexibility for evening, weekend, and emergency assignments.
