POSITION SUMMARY:

The Materials Supervisor is responsible for leading day-to-day materials, logistics, and inventory control activities in an automotive stamping environment. This role ensures uninterrupted material flow to production, on-time shipping to customers, accurate inventory records, and compliance with customer-specific packaging and labeling requirements. The Materials Supervisor partners closely with Production, Stamping Operations, Production Control, Quality, Engineering, and Supply Chain to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives while maintaining robust processes for receiving, line-side delivery, supermarkets, shipping, and warehouse operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:  

• Lead daily materials operations including receiving, put-away, supermarket management, line-side delivery, shipping, and finished goods staging across multiple shifts.
• Execute the production schedule in collaboration with Master Scheduling/Production Control; ensure materials availability and correct sequencing for stamping presses.
• Oversee inventory accuracy through strong cycle count processes, root-cause analysis of variances, reconciliation, and continuous improvement of material flow.
• Ensure compliance with customer-specific shipping requirements (labels, ASN/EDI timing, packaging specs, load configuration) and on-time delivery performance.
• Maintain and improve material replenishment systems (Kanban, milk runs, tugger routes, min/max, PFEP) to reduce shortages and excess inventory.
• Coordinate raw material (coil, sheet, blanks), WIP, returnable containers, and finished goods flow; ensure proper identification, storage conditions, and FIFO/FEFO usage.
• Partner with Stamping, Tool & Die, and Maintenance to plan material availability around die changes, trials, and press downtime.
• Verify accuracy of shipping documents (BOL, packing list, customs/international as needed) and ensure timely ASN transmission.
• Monitor and drive performance against KPIs (OTD, inventory accuracy, premium freight, line shortages, dock-to-stock time, warehouse productivity, container control).
• Collaborate with Quality on containment, nonconforming material segregation, rework flow, and corrective actions tied to supplier/customer issues.
• Enforce standardized work, work instructions, 5S, and safety procedures in warehouse, docks, and material handling areas.
• Supervise and develop materials team members (Shipping/Receiving Clerks, Material Handlers, Forklift/Tugger Drivers); manage staffing, training, and cross-training.
• Coordinate with Purchasing and Suppliers on delivery schedules, returnable dunnage, expedites, and premium freight authorization.
• Support new product launches, engineering changes, and packaging changes ensuring material readiness, labeling, and system accuracy.
• Maintain accurate ERP/MES transactions for receipts, issues, transfers, and shipments; correct errors promptly and train team on proper scanning/transaction discipline.
• Assist with warehouse layout optimization, slotting, rack utilization, and safety/ergonomic improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, IATF 16949 documentation practices (where applicable to materials), and customer logistics requirements.
• Ability to take direction, accept coaching, and act positively to improve performance.
• Assumes additional duties as assigned, which may fall outside the primary scope of the role.

Requirements:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Business, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
• 3–5 years of materials/logistics experience in manufacturing required; automotive stamping/Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with shipping/receiving, inventory control, cycle counting, and warehouse supervision.
• Working knowledge of EDI/ASN processes, customer labeling/packaging standards, and returnable container control.
• Familiarity with Lean material flow concepts (Kanban, PFEP, milk runs) and continuous improvement practices.

GENERAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

• Excellent communication skills for interacting with production teams, leadership, suppliers, carriers, and customers.
• Strong organizational skills with proven ability to maintain accurate, audit-ready records and transaction discipline.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, handle expedites, and meet tight deadlines in a high-volume environment.
• Must be a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on leadership style.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-accountability automotive manufacturing setting and lead teams across shifts.

SOFTWARE/COMPUTER SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

• Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems (e.g., SAP, QAD, Plex, Oracle or similar) for inventory, scheduling, and shipping transactions.
• Working knowledge of EDI portals, barcode scanning, and label printing software.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word); ability to analyze data, build reports, and present metrics.
• Ability to learn new systems quickly; strong keyboarding and data-entry accuracy.
