Shelter Manager

Gifford Cat Shelter – the first free-roam, no-kill shelter in the country – seeks a leader to oversee the daily operation of the shelter. This role is responsible for ensuring excellent animal care, a clean and safe environment, strong volunteer management, and efficient administrative processes. This is a hands-on role that combines animal care, cleaning, leadership, organization, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.

Major Responsibilities

• Oversee daily shelter operations and ensure high standards of animal care.
• Administer medications and monitor cats for health or behavioral concerns.
• Clean and maintain cat rooms, litter boxes, feeding areas, and common spaces.
• Train, supervise, and support volunteers.
• Maintain accurate records using CRM and shelter management systems.
• Coordinate with adopters, fosters, veterinarians, and other stakeholders.
• Manage inventory, supplies, and facility needs.
• Respond calmly and effectively to unexpected situations and emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Must have a passion for cats.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a fast-paced work environment with significant responsibility and accountability.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and stay organized under pressure.
• Strong computer skills and experience using databases, CRM systems, or similar software.
• Experience supervising, training, or directing others.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable handling cats and administering medication (or willing to be trained).
• Ability to perform physically demanding work, including cleaning, lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, and standing for extended periods.
• Gifford Cat Shelter is staffed 365 days a year; this is a full-time, 5 shifts per week role, one shift must be a weekend day.
• Driver's License required.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented.
• Self-starter who takes initiative and follows through.
• Comfortable balancing administrative work with hands-on responsibilities.
• Calm, dependable, and able to make sound decisions in a dynamic environment.
• Shares a strong commitment to animal welfare and maintaining high standards of care.
