Respiratory Therapist

The Respiratory Therapist at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides respiratory care modalities to patients as ordered by physicians or based on approved protocols, including the administration of respiratory related medications, oxygen and humidity therapies, airway clearance therapy, invasive and non invasive ventilation, lung studies, and other procedures in both ICU and non ICU settings. This role directly impacts patient safety, quality of care, and the overall patient experience across the continuum of care.

The ideal candidate will have an Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program, hold RRT, BLS, ACLS, and Texas Medical Board Respiratory Care Practitioner licensure, and be able to work the 6:30 PM - 7:00 AM shift, Monday-Friday, with rotating weekends and holidays, totaling 36 hours per week.

The Respiratory Care team supports patients across all inpatient and critical care areas, delivering life sustaining therapies and collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams. Respiratory Therapists play a vital role in airway management, ventilatory support, diagnostics, and emergency response throughout the institution.

Minimum $32.21| Midpoint $40.14 | Maximum $48.08

Essential Job Functions:

• Provide respiratory care modalities as ordered or per approved protocols, including administration of respiratory medications, oxygen/humidity therapies, airway clearance therapy, invasive and non invasive ventilation, and lung studies

• Develop, implement, and revise patient care plans while promoting patient safety, quality of care, and patient experience

• Ensure prepackaged medications are labeled with patient information and contain the correct drug, dosage, and dosage form

• Discuss orders for respiratory care with providers, nurses, supervisors, and care teams

• Verify and accurately document pertinent patient care data, including assessments and procedures, in the medical record at the time of care

• Assemble, prepare, clean, and operate respiratory care equipment according to clinical and infection control practices

• Document patient safety issues in safety intelligence systems

• Ensure proper stewardship of supplies and equipment, including returning stand by or used equipment for departmental processing

• Perform arterial blood draws and analyses

• Educate patients on respiratory medications and related modalities before, during, and after care

• Provide orientation and support to new staff members

• Maintain all required education, training, competencies, and team communications

• Attend required trainings, meetings, and skills validations

• Other duties as assigned

Education Required: Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an approved and accredited program or university

Education Preferred: Bachelor's Degree

Experience Required: None

Licensure/Certification Required: RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist, BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA), ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA), RCP - Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner by the Texas Medical Board
