Position Summary Title: Lateral Police Officer (Multiple Positions) (UPDATED) Posting Number: req25110 Department: University Police Department Location: Tucson Campus, Tucson, AZ USA The University of Arizona Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency serving the Tucson campus. Positioned in the most densely populated area of Tucson, we provide crime control, traffic safety, community engagement, and crime prevention. The role is intended for experienced peace officers holding an active AZPOST certification or equivalent. The position is known as Police Officer II. Qualifications include a strong record of critical thinking, sound judgment, and good physical and mental health. Officers must commit to public safety, civil service, integrity, and professionalism. The role comes with a one-year probation period, with opportunities for rank and lateral advancement as well as specialty assignments. Step Compensation Plan: Pay for lateral officers is based on experience. Step One equates to $57,925 (approximately $27.85 per hour). Responsibilities Safeguard life and property through enforcement of state laws and university administrative rules. Respond to public safety emergencies and calls for service. Detect suspicious and criminal activity to improve public safety conditions. Participate in proactive traffic enforcement and detect impaired drivers. Investigate crimes, crashes, and suspicious activity. Detain and arrest offenders. Collect and process evidence. Write, review, and submit incident and crash reports. Issue criminal summons, civil citations, written warnings, and verbal warnings. Participate in public education and community engagement activities. Conduct proactive patrols of thoroughfares, grounds, buildings, and facilities for asset protection and crime prevention. Attend required department training and comply with the AZPOST certification retention requirements. Testify in court, participate in attorney interviews/depositions, and respond to subpoenas. Attend unit briefings and organizational meetings. Communicate with department members and the public verbally, in writing, and electronically. If qualified, train and evaluate other department members. Participate in department programs and assist in their administration. Participate in public safety campaigns and presentations. Assist stranded motorists and lost individuals. Perform other duties as assigned. UAPD officers may be assigned to any shift or assignment; the department operates 24/7/365 and is subject to shift work. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of law enforcement procedures and best practices. Swift and reasonable decision-making based on objective observations. Ability to manage dynamic situations assertively, tactfully, and impartially. Accuracy, completeness, and speed in documenting pertinent information. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Minimum Qualifications United States citizen. At least 21 years of age at time of hire. High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license (out of state applicants must obtain an Arizona driver’s license at time of hire). Honorably discharged from prior military service, if applicable. No felony convictions. Must meet Arizona Peace Officers Standards & Training drug standards. Must possess a current AZPOST Certificate or equivalent out-of-state certification; OR a Pima Community College Law Enforcement Academy Certificate; OR verification of current enrollment in that academy. Candidate Qualifications and Testing Peace officers with an active AZPOST certification are exempt from physical aptitude testing. Those with an active out-of-state certification must pass the Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT), which includes a 500‑yard run, 99‑yard obstacle course, 165‑lb. body drag, and climbs over a 6‑foot wall and fence.
