Senior Registered Nurse/ Clinical Nurse- Surgical Acute Care- Nights

Job Description This role is designed for a nurse who is a clinical and professional leader at the unit level, demonstrating effective leadership behaviors in advancing evidence‑based practices, leading unit governance initiatives, and coaching others to grow in their roles. The nurse supports unit‑based goals and is accountable for patient care, team collaboration, and adherence to service standards, the nursing mission, vision, and values. Work Schedule Three 12‑hour shifts: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with an every‑third‑weekend requirement. General Summary The nurse participates in activities to develop personal practice and supports group practice goals at the unit level, while holding themselves accountable to patients, families, and the nurse manager for care provided and overall work performance. Clinical Practice Advances clinical practice on the unit; consistently integrates evidence into practice. Serves as a clinical expert and resource for unit nurses; mentors and coaches other nurses. Provides nursing leadership in developing and implementing unit‑level evidence‑based protocols and procedures. Develops CNI and CNII to effectively function in unit‑based roles. Models collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, planning and coordinating care and advocating for patient/family needs. Enhances practice consistent with unit operations to ensure safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, patient‑centered care. Professional Development Actively engages in advancing own practice and models this at the unit level. Mentors and coaches others to achieve and maintain competency required for the patient population served. Develops, implements, and evaluates unit‑based staff development activities. Serves as a trained preceptor and coaches CNII. Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of unit based orientation and other education activities. Develops, implements, and evaluates the skills and development of nurse support personnel. Completes continuing education annually based on facility minimum requirements. Member of a professional organization. Service & Quality Analyzes and interprets unit‑based outcomes associated with national hospital quality measures, patient‑safety goals, quality indicators, nursing‑sensitive quality indicators, and facility operating plans. Develops, implements, and evaluates unit efforts to improve quality, safety, service, and satisfaction measures. Provides unit leadership and produces elements of research, evidence‑based practice, and quality improvement initiatives. Provides high‑quality, safe, patient‑centered care with a focus on exceeding service expectations. Accountable for compliance with regulatory requirements, holds others accountable, and participates in tracer activities when requested. Patient Safety Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority. Implements policies, procedures, and guidelines consistently in the performance of assigned duties. Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, and devices and communicates them to those in charge. Participates in hospital, departmental, and/or unit patient‑safety initiatives. Operations Mentors and coaches others in the function of the charge nurse role. Provides unit leadership in the development of teamwork. Leads unit briefings and staff meetings as directed by the unit manager. Leads and fully participates in unit‑level governance. Develops, implements, and evaluates recruitment and retention strategies at the unit level. Develops, implements, and evaluates peer review at the unit level; provides direct performance feedback guided by the nurse manager. Unit Description The 6th floor is a surgical unit specializing in the care of patients before and after surgical procedures and also supports medical overflow. The unit has a patient‑to‑staff ratio of 4:1‑5:1. Patient Population Hepatobiliary Colorectal General Surgery General Orthopaedics (Total Knee, Total Hip, TMA, BKA, etc.) Ortho Spine GU (Cystectomy, Prostatectomy, Ileal Conduit, etc.) GYN Head and Neck Qualifications Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice under Compact state agreements. BSN or specialty certification. Current AHA BLS certification. Must meet all unit‑specific certification requirements (ACLS, PAL, NRP). Relevant clinical work experience related to practice on the unit. Additional Information Compensation Pay Range: $39,000 – $53,810. Other compensation (if applicable): shift differential.
