Job Title: Truck Loader / Unloader

Job Description

This role involves manually loading and unloading trailers in a high-volume distribution center using moveable conveyors and warehouse management systems. You will work on either the shipping or receiving dock, handling freight efficiently and safely while following proper loading techniques and established processes. The position is highly physical and fast-paced, requiring consistent movement in and out of trailer backs, accurate documentation, and strict adherence to performance and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload all 18-wheel trailers assigned to your dock using moveable conveyors and manual handling techniques.
• Work on either the manual loading/shipping dock or the semi-automated unloading/receiving dock, as assigned.
• Handle cross-dock freight by moving product directly from receiving to shipping without system entry when required, including relabeling as needed.
• Identify, separate, count, combine, and scan freight accurately using warehouse management system (WMS) terminals, scales, and handheld scanners.
• Apply proper loading techniques by placing heavier products on the bottom and lighter products on top to ensure safe and secure loads.
• Maintain a consistent work pace to meet productivity expectations, including moving up to 1,000 pieces per hour when required.
• Enter freight and shipment information into computer systems accurately and in a timely manner.
• Follow all safety procedures while working on and off the backs of trailers throughout the shift.
• Adapt to working in different areas of the facility as needed, including walking long distances due to the size of the distribution center.
• Comply with strict break structures and scheduled times to support continuous operations.
• Inspect freight for obvious damage or issues and report concerns according to established procedures.
• Collaborate with team members and leadership to meet hourly, daily, and weekly goals during peak season.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, including docks, trailers, and surrounding equipment.
• Use non-motorized material handling equipment as required, while refraining from operating motorized material handling equipment (MHE) as per role requirements.

Essential Skills

• 0–2 years of experience in loading and unloading trucks or working as a loader or unloader in a warehouse or distribution environment.
• 0–2 years of experience in order pulling, picking, packing, or general warehouse labor.
• Proven track record of good attendance and reliability, especially in prior roles.
• Experience in labor-intensive positions and comfort with continuous physical work.
• Ability to lift up to 60 pounds repeatedly and safely throughout the shift.
• Ability to walk extensively and move between different areas of a large facility as required.
• Familiarity with shipping and receiving processes and warehouse shipping operations.
• Basic computer skills and the ability to enter data accurately into warehouse systems.
• Ability to use handheld scanners and WMS terminals to scan and track freight.
• Capability to follow strict break schedules and adhere to structured work processes.
• Flexibility to meet hourly, daily, and weekly performance goals in a busy peak-season environment.
• Comfort working in hot conditions, including inside the backs of trailers, especially during summer months.
• Understanding of basic inspection practices to identify issues with freight.
• Willingness to follow safety guidelines and proper loading techniques at all times.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous truck loading or unloading experience is a strong plus, particularly in high-volume environments.
• Experience with material handling, production, or equipment operation in a warehouse setting.
• Exposure to forklift operations, even if not required to operate forklifts in this role.
• Background in shipping entry, warehouse inventory, packaging, and order pulling.
• Experience using scanners for picking, packing, scanning, and shipping and receiving tasks.
• Familiarity with working in a warehouse environment that may not be climate controlled.
• Interest in learning semi-automated and robotics-enhanced equipment as facility upgrades progress.
• Desire to grow into future opportunities such as leadership, management, or maintenance roles as they become available.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sutherland, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.60 - $27.30/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
