SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:

Under ongoing supervision, the Fitter-Welder fits elbows and welds, cleans and grinds fabricated products. Lays out, fit and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms while meeting all quality and safety standards. May assist in coordinating activities of welders for special welding techniques and/or procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Fits elbow and attachment using torch & tack welding
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together
  • Cuts products with torch and other tools.
  • Gouges welds.
  • Grinds welds and fabricated pieces
  • Welds product according to plans and specifications
  • Completes proper documentation.
  • Moves pipe with overhead crane.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in the departmental housekeeping and safety efforts and works collaboratively with other members of the department and production counterparts to ensure production workflow

WORK HOURS / SHIFT
  • Work hours vary or change from eight to twelve hours shifts based on operational needs.
  • Must be able to work on Saturdays and overtime as required.
FITTER-WELDER - this level of Fitter-Welder is responsible for the welding, grinding and fitting of pipe and elbow product to the directed specifications. Individuals in this position are expected to . Training is provided and duties are routinely carried out under close supervision; however, close supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks, and these tasks can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. As work experience is gained, employees may be assigned to more advanced tasks that include more responsibility.

FITTER-WELDER II - this level of Fitter-Welder is responsible for performing duties described for a Fitter-Welder I. The qualifications and experience of this level of operator must be at an intermediate level, with encouragement to develop various techniques to complement existing skillsets, such as back gouging, FCAW, SMAW and X-ray welding analysis. Duties are carried out under limited to close supervision. As additional work experience is gained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility.

FITTER-WELDER III - this level of Fitter-Welder is responsible for performing duties described for a Fitter-Welder II. This level of operator requires advanced training, qualifications and experience. Duties are routinely carried out under minimal supervision. Employees in this position may be responsible for providing on-the-job training (OJT) to new employees.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • On the job training by other fitters who have experience, knowledge and insight into the job. Qualified by performance.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • FCAW weld qualified and/or the ability to pass weld test

  • Communicating: Expressing or exchanging ideas and information accurately in written or diagram form.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fire discriminations in sounds.
Up to 2/3 of the time:
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. (This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.)
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. Less than 1/3 of the time:
  • Kneeling/Crouching: Position self to change welding wire
  • Crawling: Moving about to work on smaller on pipe.
  • Reaching: Grabbing things from a distance above or from the side.
  • Walking: Moving about accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from on work site to another.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward downward or outward.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher positon or moving objects horizontally from position to position. (The factor important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.)
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling to use measuring devices.
  • Feeling Perceiving attributes of objects such as size shape temperature or texture by touching with skin particularly that of fingertips.
Physical Requirements:
  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and /or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Visual Acuity:
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures transcribing viewing a computer terminal extensive reading visual inspection involving small defects small parts and /or operation of machines (including inspection) using measurement devices and /or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

  • The worker is required to have peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
  • The worker is required to have the ability to adjust visual focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus)
Weather Conditions:

Over 2/3 of the time:
  • The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
  • The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
Up to 2/3 of the time:
  • The worker is subject to extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than hour. (Consideration should be given to the effect of other environment conditions such as wind and humidity.)
  • The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: Once or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes odors dusts mists gases or poor ventilation.
Less than 1/3 of the time:
  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: No activities occur inside and outside.
  • The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour (Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as wind and humidity.)
  • The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.
  • The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles electrical current working on scaffolding and high places exposure to high heat or exposure to chemical.
  • The worker is required to wear a respirator.
Noise Levels:

Over 2/3 of the time:
  • Loud noise (examples: metal can be manufacturing department large earth-moving equipment)
Up to 2/3 of the time
  • Very loud noise (example: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert)
Supervision Received:
  • Close Supervision: The incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedures and receives detailed instructions. Work is checked frequently.
