Mosquito Control Technician 1 (2 Positions) Location: 4100 118th Avenue North, Clearwater FL 33762 Schedule: Monday - Thursday; 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Public Works is dedicated to improving safety, protecting the environment and enhancing the quality of life in the community. The Mosquito Control and Vegetation Management team plays an important role in protecting residents and visitors across Pinellas County and all 24 municipalities. In this position, you will help monitor, manage, and treat mosquitoes in a variety of environments using Integrated Pest Management practices and approved control methods. This skilled technical role focuses on identifying and treating mosquitoes at all life stages, with an emphasis on targeting mosquito populations before they become adults. Your work will directly support public health by helping reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness while also minimizing nuisance mosquito activity throughout the County. What Will You Do? Monitor and manage mosquitoes of all life stages through surveillance techniques such as dipping and landing rate counts and treatments ranging from chemical application to placement of mosquito fish. Identify mosquito adults and larvae to genus in various sites to target problematic species and plan the appropriate control methods. Determine an appropriate control plan for sites based on knowledge of the mosquito life cycle, water and weather conditions, and other variables. Perform maintenance on application equipment such as backpack sprayers and hand foggers. Operate application equipment in an appropriate manner including determining proper rates, accounting for environmental conditions, calculating acreage, and calibrating equipment. What Do You Need To Have? Experience: At least one (1) year experience in weed and/or pest control spraying or abatement, industrial or commercial chemical spraying; or Education: Vocational or technical trades certification or diploma in Agriculture, Horticulture or related field, or Associate’s degree or two (2) year vocational or technical trades certification or diploma as described above; or Bachelor’s or higher-level degree as described above; or An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. Additional Requirements Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report. Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations including but not limited to working either during or immediately after hurricanes, and work overtime if needed for storms, mosquito outbreaks, and out of the ordinary circumstances, which may include routinely working on weekends and holidays. As a Condition of Employment Must obtain and maintain Core, with certification in Florida Public Health Pest Control License within one (1) year of hire date. Must obtain a Florida Public or Commercial Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators license with certification in the following categories within two (2) years of hire date: Aquatic Weed Control. Highly Desirable Possession and maintenance of Public Applicators License with certification in Aquatic Weed Control and Public Health License. Experience calibrating spray equipment. Knowledge of Florida mosquito species and treatment techniques. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to work in Florida outdoor environments including adapting to adverse weather conditions and encountering wildlife. Ability to operate powered small equipment such as a backpack sprayer or hand fogger. Ability to navigate computers and tablets to enter work data. Ability to drive off road.
