Position Overview The Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining Maintenance of Traffic equipment (MOT) including Message Boards, Arrow Boards, Speed Radar Boards, Portable Regulatory Boards, and utility trailers. The role requires 12‑Volt diagnostic ability with CPU, PCB, Solar Regulatory Chargers, character panel wiring, familiarity with series and parallel electrical circuits in relation to battery configurations, welding/fabrication ability, and understanding of basic hydraulic motor and cylinder functions. Training will be provided for specific equipment in use by our company. Essential Job Functions Work on small equipment trailers. Determine equipment condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifying worn and damaged parts. Keep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules, installing component and part upgrades, and general maintenance of trailers. Correct equipment deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub‑assemblies, components. Verify equipment performance by conducting tests and adjusting controls and systems. Maintain equipment appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting. Maintain equipment records by annotating services and repairs. Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs while evaluating service and parts options. Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, verifying receipt. Trailer mechanical repair experience is a plus. Electrical and welding experience is a plus. 2–4 years of preventative maintenance of trailers is a plus. Battery charging and testing experience is a plus. Perform all other duties as assigned. Requirements Valid driver's license required; passing MVR and controlled substance test; background and criminal record check may be required; knowledge of local driving rules and regulations. Repeated physical effort including driving for several hours per day, standing and walking for extended periods, loading and unloading equipment, walking on varying ground surfaces, and lifting a minimum of 50 pounds. Working from elevated platforms, ladders, or truck beds. Operating hand/power tools, manual dexterity to operate keyboards and smartphones, and physical agility to use arms, legs, and hands repetitively. Working outdoors in adverse environmental and weather conditions, including high speed traffic areas, heavy construction equipment, fuel fumes, and construction substances. Comfortable around moving vehicles, maintaining constant awareness on construction sites. Vision adequate to see moving vehicles, read highway construction MOT signs, read instructions, manuals, reports, and construction plans. Hearing adequate to hear approaching vehicles, audible commands at a distance, conversations in person, and over the telephone. Communicating clearly—both written and verbally, ability to complete daily paperwork as required. Working a flexible schedule that can include day or night shifts, weekends and holidays, adjusting to a changing work schedule, working overtime, and working individually and as a team with other employees.
