Maintenance Custodian

Purpose of Classification This is labor‑intensive work maintaining the cleanliness of County‑owned facilities, common areas, and grounds. Under the supervision of the Buildings and Grounds department, the employee is responsible for the day‑to‑day operations of the upkeep of Anderson County Courthouse, including the facilities and grounds. Essential Functions Responsible for cleaning all county offices including vacuuming, trash pick‑up, and cleaning windows. Mopping restrooms and cleaning toilets and sinks. Restrooms should be cleaned daily and stocked with paper towels, soap, and toilet paper. All floors, including stair wells, should be mopped and swept daily. Elevator floors and walls should be cleaned weekly. Ashtrays outside the building should be emptied daily. The exterior door windows should be cleaned twice weekly. The grounds surrounding the Courthouse and other County buildings should be picked up and tended to three times a week. Assist other employees with loading and unloading trucks. Perform related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Knowledge of safety procedures involving cleaning supplies and proper handling and disposal of cleaning chemicals (including Materials Safety Data Sheets). Knowledge of cleaning materials, equipment, supplies, and materials used in an institutional setting. Some knowledge of routine maintenance procedures involving public facilities. Ability to plan and organize daily activities to complete established work assignments and assist other staff when needed. Ability to react to emergencies or unexpected events promptly and responsively. Ability to consistently adhere to established operating policies, procedures, and schedules. ADA Compliance / Physical Demands Analysis Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert physical effort and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects and materials of moderate weight (25–50 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination of cues or signals. Some tasks require oral communication. Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Illustrative Examples of Work Sweeps, vacuums, and/or mops offices, bathrooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas on a daily basis. Empties trash cans and removes debris from common areas and grounds as necessary. Cleans up spills in the event of unexpected accidents. Cleans and sanitizes bathroom sinks, commodes, and water fountains daily. Vacuums carpeted rooms and common areas according to established schedules. Assists with ordering and maintaining an adequate inventory of cleaning equipment and supplies and stocking bathrooms and closets with needed supplies, equipment, and materials. Removes handprints and cleans windows and glass doors. Makes furniture movements and strips and waxes floors as needed. Cleans windows, mirrors, and walls when necessary. Interacts with co‑workers, vendors, clientele, and the public to provide general knowledge. Replaces light bulbs and performs other routine maintenance activities when required. Prepares facilities for special meetings and/or events and cleans up afterward. Picks up supplies as needed. Performs related duties as required. Necessary Requirements Of Work Knowledge of safety procedures involving cleaning supplies and proper handling and disposal of cleaning chemicals. Knowledge of cleaning materials, equipment, supplies, and materials used in an institutional setting. Knowledge of floor maintenance practices and methods including stripping and waxing of various types of floor surfaces such as wood, linoleum tile, and marble. Some knowledge of routine maintenance procedures involving public facilities. Ability to plan and organize daily activities to complete established work assignments and assist other staff when needed. Ability to react to emergencies or unexpected events promptly and responsively. Ability to determine overall cleanliness and sanitation of public facilities and address any identified deficiencies. Ability to consistently adhere to established operating policies, procedures, and schedules. Ability to interact successfully with co‑workers, vendors, and the public.
