Supervisor, Custodial Services

Position Overview The Facilities Department of the West Valley-Mission Community College District is seeking a talented and dedicated individual to fill the position of Supervisor, Custodial Services. Under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, the Custodial Supervisor will plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise custodial operations to ensure clean, safe, and well‑maintained District facilities. The position is responsible for overseeing night‑shift custodial services, supervising and supporting custodial staff, monitoring work quality and productivity, coordinating schedules and special event support, and ensuring compliance with District policies and safety regulations. Assignment 100 % full time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year, anticipated start date October 26, 2026. Schedule may include evening or weekend hours as needed. This position is a member of the Supervisors Unit (Teamsters Local 856). Work location: West Valley College, Saratoga, CA or Mission College, Santa Clara, CA. Shift: Monday‑Friday, 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Salary and Benefits Anticipated monthly salary: $8,468.00 – $9,323.17 (Supervisor Salary Schedule, Range 15, Steps A‑C). CalPERS retirement. Union affiliation. Minimum Qualifications Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in a general education or related field. Four years of increasingly responsible experience in custodial services, including at least one year of technical and functional supervision over assigned staff. Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious, cultural, disability, and sexual orientation backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of prescribed use of chemicals, disinfectants, and cleaning products. Knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials used in custodial work. Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance evaluations. Knowledge of principles and practices of budget monitoring. Knowledge of principles and practices of safety management. Knowledge of pertinent local, state, and federal laws, ordinances, and rules. Ability to organize, implement, and direct custodial operations/activities. Ability to analyze work papers, reports and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem‑solve operational and technical policy and procedures. Ability to perform required physical activities and use office equipment. Ability to interpret and explain safety and hazardous materials requirements and department policies. Ability to assist in developing and monitoring an assigned program budget. Ability to develop and recommend policies and procedures related to assigned operations. Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff. Ability to use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority. Ability to operate and use modern office equipment, including computers and applicable software. Ability to maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule. Ability to utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural, and socio‑economic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy. Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and collaborative working relationships with others. Ability to work beyond normal business hours, attend evening meetings, and/or perform weekend work. Duties and Responsibilities Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for performance of custodial functions; implement policies and procedures. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in night‑shift custodial work on a college campus. Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; prepare reports on operations and activities. Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; monitor and control expenditures. Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures. Distribute materials and supplies to custodial staff on campus grounds; prepare requisitions and order supplies. Coordinate requests for set‑up and moving of furniture and equipment for special events; schedule large, periodic custodial assignments such as carpet or window cleaning. Conduct daily campus and building inspections to maintain a safe and sanitary environment; report unsafe conditions and submit work orders for needed repairs. Answer questions and provide information to students, staff, administrators, and others; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co‑workers, other district employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
