The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City’s step placement policy.
This position may be underfilled as an Engineer Intern with a pay range of 514 - $32.49 - $49.66 hourly.

POSITION DESIGNATION
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION
The Civil Engineer I position supports key Engineering Division functions that promote public safety, regulatory compliance, and effective infrastructure management. Working across the Drainage and Bridge and Paving Sections, the role assists with activities that protect the community from flooding and maintain safe, reliable streets and sidewalks. Responsibilities include supporting bridge and dam inspections, helping update drainage criteria and ordinances, coordinating Corps of Engineers permits, and reviewing plans and calculations for Bond and Capital Improvement Projects. The position also contributes to pavement management by coordinating intergovernmental funding, reviewing street and sidewalk construction plans, assisting with pavement repair recommendations and utility cut evaluations, and supporting the Pavement Management System.
JOB SUMMARY
This position is located in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary purpose of this job is to independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria and to use judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications to engineering projects. The knowledge and skills required to efficiently and effectively apply engineering principles and practices to public works projects must be acquired prior to assuming the position. Essential job functions include : designing proposed projects or systems modifications; reviewing construction plans to ensure compliance with City codes, ordinances, standards, and overall project feasibility; and traveling to review the implementation of plans in actual construction. The job involves administrative processing of detailed information, including contracts, and may entail appraising property values and determining specific requirements (i.e., sanitary sewer, easement, etc.) for the completion of engineering projects. Employees in this classification also supervise technical and clerical personnel performing tasks related to specific projects. This classification often serves as an information source for City employees at all levels and the public and is frequently required to render technical advice and opinions with regard to specific projects. Supervision is received from section/division head-level Civil Engineers.

NOTE: Professional Engineer’s License must be issued by the State of Oklahoma or a state having reciprocity with the State of Oklahoma.
NOTE : If an individual is selected who does not possess a Professional Engineer’s License issued by the State of Oklahoma, that individual will be classified as an Engineer Intern and be compensated at the Engineer Intern salary range until such time as required licensure is obtained. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a Professional Engineer’s License issued by the State of Oklahoma within twelve (12) months from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in the review, preparation, and interpretation of civil engineering plans and calculations, final plats, and legal descriptions.
- Knowledge of FEMA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rules and regulations, as well as paving and drainage design standards and requirements.
- Experience in civil engineering design, plan review, and project specifications.
- Experience with common software packages, including HEC‑RAS, HydroCAD, HY‑8, Hydraflow, and HEC‑HMS.
- Familiarity with common software packages (Microsoft Excel and Word).

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Inside and outside; exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc.
- Subject to working near moving machinery, power tools, and vehicles in motion.
- Exposed to intermittent or continued loud and incessant noises caused by machinery and construction equipment.
- Exposed to varying amounts of noxious odors, dust, etc., when performing field inspections.
- Occasional local travel.
Note : Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Near vision enough to read standard office correspondence, including the fine print found in specification books and on reduced copies of maps, plans, etc.
- Hearing enough to identify factors such as the location of vehicles and equipment or when equipment is malfunctioning.
- Manual and finger dexterity enough to operate standard office equipment and to produce hand- written and electronically generated correspondence.
- Speech and hearing enough to communicate in-person and by telephone, two-way radio, etc.
