Location & Title Claremont, CA – Assistant Softball Coach / Athletic Operations Program Overview The Joint CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Program comprises student‑athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges. CMS varsity teams compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), as a member of NCAA Division III. The program includes 21 varsity sports (10 men’s, 11 women’s) and supports a student population of over 3,200 and a student‑athlete population of approximately 530. CMS Softball (the Athenas) has a rich history of success, winning eight SCIAC regular season championships and five SCIAC postseason tournament titles, including a regular‑season co‑champion in 2024. The Athenas have made numerous appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Position Overview This position assists the Head Softball Coach in all facets of the program, including training, recruitment, travel logistics, scholar‑athlete development, and compliance. Additional duties include support of the Sport Operations Department during the off season. Responsibilities Coaching (67%) Assist the Head Coach with developing and implementing training and instruction for practices and competitions. Provide assistance with all administrative aspects of the sports program, including prompt completion of paperwork, team travel logistics, creation of practice plans, scholar‑athlete development, and collaboration with CMS athletics staff in sports medicine, business operation, compliance, equipment, facilities, and events. Recruit and retain academically qualified student‑athletes to the highly selective Claremont Colleges. Comply with all NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, and SCIAC rules, reporting any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department. Maintain required training and certifications (concussion management, mental health resources, sexual violence prevention). Represent CMS about the Softball program within the SCIAC and regionally/nationally. Athletic Department / Campus Operations (33%) Assist the Sport Operations team with Games Management during the off season. Assist with facility operations: lining fields, setting up and takedown of bleachers and carpeting, ensuring efficient operation of contests for participants, officials, visiting institutions, and fans. Occasionally serve as lead administrator for Games Management, supervising student workers and ensuring a smooth gameday experience. Perform any other duties deemed necessary for the functioning and success of the Athletic Facilities and Sport Operations. Maintain regular attendance; failure to meet attendance requirements may preclude continued employment. Qualifications Must possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent education/experience. Previous collegiate participation and coaching preferred. Experience in recruiting academically focused scholar‑athletes preferred. Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy. Strong administrative, interpersonal, and computer/technology skills. Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, or willingness to complete upon hire. Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and relevant professional software. Demonstrated understanding of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college environment and experience recruiting to highly selective institutions. Requirements Full‑time (11‑month) position. Regular hours may vary; holiday, weekend, and evening work required; travel required. Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
