Job Title: Staff Pharmacist – Remote Mail-Order Specialty Pharmacy Job Description This role offers the opportunity to work as a Staff Pharmacist in a remote, closed-door mail-order specialty pharmacy, ensuring that patients receive the correct medications safely and accurately. You will review and verify prescriptions, oversee pharmacy technician work, provide clinical guidance, and support patients and providers through phone-based counseling and communication. This is a 12‑month contract position with the possibility of becoming permanent based on business needs and performance. Responsibilities Review and approve incoming and outgoing medication orders by interpreting physician prescriptions to ensure the right drug, dose, strength, directions, quantity, and patient information are correct. Conduct detailed prescription review and data quality checks to verify clinical accuracy, quality, and drug utilization review compliance for all prescriptions processed by the pharmacy. Identify orders that fall outside FDA-approved labeling and program guidelines and ensure appropriate documentation and justification are present. Review and approve orders that exceed FDA-approved dose maximums when supported by appropriate clinical documentation and established guidelines. Oversee and guide pharmacy technicians in the preparation, processing, and dispensing of medications to ensure accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance. Communicate with prescribers and provider offices via inbound and outbound calls to clarify orders, confirm dosing and administration, and resolve prescription-related questions. Handle outbound calls to pharmacies and members as needed to address prescription issues, refills, and medication-related inquiries. Provide patient and family education over the phone, counseling on how and when to take medications, potential side effects, and strategies to minimize adverse events. Answer patient questions about side effects, dosage, storage, and safe use of pharmaceuticals, ensuring clear and empathetic communication. Monitor drug therapies to ensure appropriate use, identify potential drug interactions, and support optimal therapeutic outcomes. Identify and report adverse events and product complaints in accordance with pharmacy regulations and client requirements. Conduct additional outreach, follow-up, and counseling to patients as required by regulatory programs, including Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) requirements. Ensure compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, regulations, and program guidelines, staying current with changes in pharmacy practice and FDA regulations. Maintain pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, participating in professional societies, and completing continuing education to maintain and renew licenses. Ensure the program delivers correct, high-quality products to customers in a timely and professional manner, with a strong focus on quality and attention to detail. Collaborate effectively with call center and other program staff to support smooth operational workflows and a positive patient experience. Interact with clients as appropriate to support operational process reviews and provide clinical and operational insight. Provide subject matter expertise to program staff and clients on pharmacy operations, medication safety, and specialty drug handling. Ensure adherence to established procedures for quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and proper disposal of hazardous waste drugs. Report prescription errors immediately and follow company policies and procedures regarding medication incidents and quality events. Maintain confidentiality of patient and program information at all times in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements. Supervise and guide staff by providing coaching, feedback, and day‑to‑day direction to support high performance and compliance. Contribute to staff development by conducting detailed performance reviews, helping set goals and objectives, and offering ongoing mentoring. Use computer systems and data entry tools efficiently to process high volumes of prescriptions, document activities, and manage multiple requests simultaneously. Support prior authorization processes, pharmacy benefits management activities, and managed care requirements related to prescription coverage and approvals. Assist with prescription refills and ensure continuity of therapy for patients receiving specialty medications. Contribute to overall team efforts by performing related duties as needed to support the pharmacy’s operations and patient care. Essential Skills Minimum of 1–2 years of professional experience as a Pharmacist in a retail or specialty pharmacy setting. B.S. in Pharmacy (B.S. Pharm degree) required. PharmD degree preferred. Current and valid Pharmacist state license in good standing in the state of residence. Experience in retail pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, or mail-order pharmacy environments. Demonstrated ability to perform accurate prescription review and data quality checks in a high‑volume setting. Experience with call center or phone-based customer service in a pharmacy or healthcare environment. Proficiency in administering and managing medication therapies, including dosing and dosage verification. Strong knowledge of pharmacology, including drug interactions and appropriate drug utilization. Knowledge of FDA health regulations and familiarity with FDA-approved labeling and dose limits. Experience with pharmacy benefits management (PBM), prior authorization processes, and managed care concepts. Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, and internal teams. Demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making skills in clinical and operational situations. Ability to analyze information and manage complex medication regimens, especially high-cost specialty drugs. Proficiency with basic computer programs and pharmacy systems, including data entry and multitasking across multiple requests. Strong focus on quality, accuracy, and attention to detail in all aspects of pharmacy practice. Ability to handle multiple requests at one time while ensuring timely review and fulfillment of medication orders. Understanding of legal compliance requirements related to pharmacy practice, controlled substances, and hazardous drug handling. Customer service skills with the ability to support patients and providers professionally and empathetically. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a mail-order or closed-door pharmacy environment is beneficial. Experience in specialty pharmacy, including handling high-cost and complex medications, is preferred. Experience with pharmacy management or supervisory responsibilities, including coaching and mentoring staff. Familiarity with prescription refill workflows and continuity-of-care processes. Experience in healthcare or medical environments with a focus on patient safety and quality. Comfort working in a high-volume prescription processing environment with strict quality standards. Participation in professional societies and ongoing professional development activities. Strong organizational skills and the ability to contribute to process improvements and operational reviews. Work Environment This position is based in a remote, closed-door mail-order specialty pharmacy that ships medications directly to patients’ homes. The pharmacy focuses on specialty drugs that are high cost and often clinically complex, requiring careful handling, detailed verification, and close patient support. Pharmacy hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and individual shifts typically fall between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., with a later shift example of 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There is potential for earlier start times (such as 6:00 a.m.) and possible weekend work in the future based on business needs. The role involves extensive computer use, data entry, and phone-based communication with patients, providers, and internal teams, similar to a call center environment but focused on pharmacy operations. The position is offered as a 12‑month contract with the potential to convert to a permanent role depending on performance and business requirements. Training includes an initial onboarding period of up to two and a half days, typically from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by approximately four weeks of program‑specific training during the same hours. Candidates must be available for the full training period and should not schedule time off during training. The work environment emphasizes accuracy, regulatory compliance, patient confidentiality, and collaboration with call center and program staff to ensure timely and professional delivery of medications.
