Position Summary

Our client, a well-established civil contractor, is seeking an experienced Civil Construction Manager to lead the execution of civil projects across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. This is a senior field leadership role for someone who knows the craft of building work in the field and has the technical knowledge, credibility, and leadership to run multiple active projects at once.

This individual puts the right field leadership in place, holds Superintendents and project teams accountable, monitors production and cost, catches issues before they hit the job, and delivers each project safely, on schedule, within budget, and to plans and specifications.

The right person is equally at home reviewing schedules and cost reports in the office and walking a jobsite: evaluating means and methods, checking quantities, coordinating subcontractors, and solving field problems in real time.

What You'll Do

FIELD OPERATIONS LEADERSHIP

• Provide overall operational leadership for civil construction projects throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, owning safety, schedule, production, quality, and cost performance on every job.
• Put the right field leadership in place, hold Superintendents and project teams accountable, and step in early when manpower, production, schedule, or quality issues surface.
• Ensure every project has the supervision, labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor support to hit production goals, adjusting field resources as workload and project phase demand.
• Serve as the senior field resource for difficult site conditions, sequencing issues, constructability concerns, and subcontractor problems, and give senior leadership regular updates on status, schedule, budget, staffing, and risk.

TECHNICAL OVERSIGHT: CIVIL MEANS & METHODS

• Bring a strong working knowledge of civil means and methods, and intelligently evaluate how work is being performed in the field.
• Oversee the full range of civil scopes: site development and clearing, mass earthwork and cut/fill, grading and subgrade prep, soil stabilization, aggregate base, storm drainage and underground utilities, water and sewer, drainage structures, trenching and compaction, structural concrete and foundations, roadway and paving, erosion control, and dewatering.
• Understand how field conditions, weather, soils, equipment selection, crew composition, production rates, sequencing, access, haul distances, and subcontractor performance drive both schedule and profitability.
• Coordinate survey and layout, testing and inspections, quality control, and civil subcontractor management.

SUPERINTENDENT MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

• Recruit, select, and assign qualified Site Superintendents, matching them to projects by size, complexity, location, and technical demands.
• Set clear expectations before mobilization and conduct regular project reviews covering daily reports, production, manpower, subcontractors, equipment, and upcoming work.
• Coach Superintendents on planning, leadership, scheduling, documentation, and cost awareness, and develop the next generation of field leaders from within.
• Address performance problems quickly and professionally, and create consistency in how projects run across every market.

SCHEDULE & PRODUCTION

• Manage project schedules with Project Managers and Superintendents, setting realistic sequencing and milestones and monitoring the critical path for delays before they threaten completion dates.
• Require detailed two- and three-week look-ahead schedules, and ensure materials, equipment, subcontractors, inspections, and manpower are staged ahead of the work.
• Diagnose the true cause of delays, whether labor, equipment, subcontractors, design changes, weather, owner decisions, or field productivity, and drive recovery plans when jobs fall behind.
• Tie equipment selection, crew composition, and cycle times to field production, eliminating idle time and inefficient mobilization while improving daily output.

BUDGET, COST & DOCUMENTATION

• Own field execution within the approved budget, tracking actual production against estimated rates and catching cost overruns early.
• Review labor hours, equipment utilization, subcontractor performance, and installed quantities, and work with Project Managers on cost-to-complete projections and profitability.
• Evaluate field changes for cost and schedule impact, and ensure out-of-scope work is documented before it proceeds; support change-order documentation, time-and-material tracking, and field verification of extra work.
• Ensure weather and owner-caused delays and changed conditions are documented to support change orders, claims, and time extensions, staying ahead of committed costs and financial exposure.

SAFETY & QUALITY

• Reinforce the company's safety expectations on every project, verifying OSHA compliance, pre-task planning, toolbox talks, and job-specific hazard controls for excavation, trenching, traffic, lifting, and confined spaces.
• Require unsafe conditions to be corrected immediately, and promote a culture where production goals never override safe work.
• Ensure work is built to contract documents, plans, specifications, approved submittals, and code, coordinating compaction, concrete, utility, and survey testing.
• Minimize rework by making sure crews understand elevations, tolerances, and specs before installation, and drive timely punch-list and closeout.

What We're Looking For

• 10+ years of progressive civil construction experience preferred, with significant time managing operations in the field.
• Prior senior field leadership as a Construction Manager, General Superintendent, Senior or Area Superintendent, Operations Manager, or similar role, directly managing Superintendents and multiple field crews.
• Strong command of civil means and methods and civil scopes, including earthwork, grading, underground utilities, drainage, concrete, and site development.
• Ability to read and interpret civil, grading, and utility plans, profiles, details, and specifications, with a firm grasp of elevations, benchmarks, slopes, grades, quantities, and survey/layout.
• Proven ability to manage schedules and the critical path, and to manage labor, equipment, subcontractors, and materials within budget.
• Experience reviewing job cost information and identifying overruns, plus strong knowledge of construction safety practices.
• Ability to solve difficult field problems without constant direction, and to hold experienced field personnel accountable while earning their respect.
• Willingness to travel regularly across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Nice to Have

• Experience running several active civil projects simultaneously, across multiple states or geographic markets.
• Large-scale site development, infrastructure, industrial civil, municipal, roadway, utility, or heavy civil experience.
• Experience managing General Superintendents, coordinating self-perform civil crews, and running subcontractor-heavy projects.
• Strong job-costing and cost-to-complete forecasting; experience developing project execution plans and recovery schedules.
• Proficiency with project scheduling software and construction management platforms.
• OSHA 30 certification and excavation/trenching Competent Person training.
• Familiarity with GPS machine control, survey equipment, and modern civil construction technology.

This role is not for someone whose experience has been primarily administrative or office based. Our client wants a professional who knows civil work from the ground up, someone who can walk onto a project and quickly recognize:

• Whether crews are building the work correctly and subcontractors are performing.

Compensation & Support

• Base salary of $225,000 to $275,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
• Company truck and phone allowance.
• Based out of Gonzales, LA, with travel to active projects throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
