CT Prosecutor: Deputy Assistant State's Attorney or Apprentice

Introduction The State of Connecticut, Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of all criminal matters in the State of Connecticut. It is an independent agency of the executive branch, established under the Constitution of the State of Connecticut. The Division is composed of the Office of the Chief State's Attorney in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, and the Offices of the State's Attorneys for each of the thirteen Judicial Districts. Position Overview We are recruiting for a full‑time Deputy Assistant State's Attorney or Apprentice Prosecutor position for the Tolland Judicial District GA 19 in Rockville, CT. Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 40‑hour week with core hours 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Salary: Deputy Assistant State's Attorney $97,997 to $175,434 annually; Apprentice Prosecutor $46.94 per hour. Starting salary determined by Division head based on experience. Position number 5261. Roles and Responsibilities Review all documentation related to assigned criminal cases and infractions and direct supplemental investigation. Prepare cases for arraignment, selecting appropriate charges, and preparing an original statement of facts. Review outstanding defense motions and prepare responses or objections as appropriate. Interview witnesses and victims. Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the case in light of findings. Initiate and complete related legal research. Negotiate plea agreements with defense attorneys. Conduct pre‑trial conferences; conduct jury selection; try cases before juries, three‑judge panels, single judge or magistrate. Review applications for arrest warrants and, upon approval, present them to the presiding judge. Maintain liaison with and serve as a resource to state and local police. Advise victims of crimes as to their rights and direct them to appropriate supportive agencies. Defend petitions of habeas corpus including preparing pleadings, arguing motions, and trial of action. For members of the Appellate Unit, defend appeals brought by convicted defendants before the Appellate Court and Supreme Court. May prepare appellate material for submission to Chief State's Attorney's Office after conviction. May review applications for search and seizure warrants. Perform related duties as required. Knowledge, Skill and Ability Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply relevant state and federal criminal law, criminal law and legal process, legal principles and practice, and the statutory authority, operation and administration of the Division of Criminal Justice. Considerable interpersonal, negotiating, trial and counseling skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to analyze legal problems and present statements of fact, law, and argument. Ability to write legal briefs and supporting documentation. Minimum Qualifications Deputy Assistant State's Attorney: Attorney at law with membership in good standing with the Connecticut Bar. Apprentice Prosecutor: Accredited law school student within five months of graduation and certified legal intern pursuant to the rules of the Superior Court of the State of Connecticut. Admission to the Connecticut Bar within one year of graduation is required for promotion. Background check required for appointment. All incumbents may be required to travel as part of daily work.
