Software Engineer (Python) GSE

Salary: $100,000 - 170,000 per year Requirements:

• Strong proficiency in Python, including asyncio and concurrent or asynchronous programming.
• Hands-on experience communicating with laboratory test equipment and hardware devices, such as instruments, controllers, and embedded systems, including VISA and SCPI.
• Solid understanding of object-oriented design and software design principles for complex systems.
• Demonstrated ability to debug, stabilize, and optimize software that interacts with physical hardware.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across software, test, systems, electrical, and manufacturing engineering disciplines.
• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• U.S. Person status as defined by ITAR, 22 CFR 120.62 (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual).
• 3–9 years of professional Python software development experience.
• Preferred: Experience with automated electronic test systems and Ground Support Equipment (GSE) in aerospace, defense, or complex electronics environments.
• Preferred: Hands-on experience with PyVISA, serial interfaces, CAN, TCP/IP, or other common instrument and control protocols.
• Preferred: Experience in manufacturing or production test environments, particularly high-reliability or safety-critical settings.
• Preferred: A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Technology, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
• Preferred: Experience developing reusable software components or libraries used by multiple teams or projects.
• Preferred: Experience designing maintainable, scalable, reusable software for engineering and production organizations.
• Preferred: Experience mentoring or onboarding less experienced engineers.

• Design and deliver GSE software platform subsystems according to established standards, principles, and practices.
• Write and review asynchronous Python code for concurrent control of instruments and support equipment.
• Develop reusable Python components and libraries for automated GSE and test systems.
• Define interfaces and abstractions for instruments, communication buses, and test procedures within your scope.
• Assess relevant tools and libraries and recommend solutions with supporting tradeoff analysis.
• Build and maintain reusable instrument drivers and communication abstractions for varied projects and test systems.
• Extend execution framework capabilities for sequencing, scheduling, concurrency, error handling, logging, and health monitoring.
• Develop measurement acquisition, data processing, and results management software integrated with enterprise engineering tools and data systems.
• Implement configuration, deployment, and monitoring mechanisms for GSE software in laboratory and production environments.
• Work with Integration & Test engineers to turn requirements into reliable, maintainable automated test procedures on the GSE platform.
• Coordinate integration of GSE software with enterprise systems, including engineering databases, PLM, configuration management, and data repositories.
• Contribute to framework design discussions with the Principal GSE Software Engineer and Lead Test Systems Engineer.
• Support production testing by diagnosing issues, improving performance, and increasing reliability.
• Follow professional software engineering practices, including code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, documentation, and configuration management.
• Mentor junior software and test engineers in asynchronous programming, software design, and automated test and GSE practices.
• Review colleagues changes and raise design and maintainability concerns constructively.
• Analyze root causes of GSE software issues within your area and implement lasting corrective actions.

This mid- or senior-level role focuses on owning significant subsystems of a reusable software platform for automated electronic test systems and GSE. It is a hands-on position at the intersection of software engineering, hardware control, and systems integration—not a QA automation or web application role—and offers the opportunity to grow toward broader platform and architectural responsibility. The estimated annual salary is $100,000–$170,000 and may vary with role duties, candidate credentials and experience, and geographic jurisdiction.
