A single-site specialty chemicals manufacturer is adding its first dedicated Controls Engineer. You report to the Engineering Manager and become the automation lead for the whole site: Allen‑Bradley PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and the industrial control networks that keep production running. It carries the stability and benefits of a large public company, the ownership of a small plant, and relocation support for the right candidate. As your skills grow, so do your projects. If you are a controls or electrical engineer at a large plant, you know the trade‑off: plenty of resources, but you are one of many, boxed into one repetitive slice, waiting on someone else to make the call. Here you own a huge part of the project from scope to finished system. The hiring manager put it plainly: the redundant, boring parts of controls work exist everywhere; the part that gets an engineer excited is taking things on your own, start to finish. Generalists with real breadth across Allen‑Bradley PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and controls troubleshooting, not a one‑platform specialist Engineers who want to own a project end to end and find their own resources, not wait on a big support bench Builders comfortable splitting the week roughly in thirds: project work, floor troubleshooting, and ad hoc wherever the plant needs them Strong communicators who can scope a problem, then coordinate contractors and integrators to execute it Anyone who feels boxed in or under‑challenged today and wants real ownership with room to grow If you want to sit at a desk and program in a corner all day, or you need a specialist standing by for every task, this is not your role. Hard skills Hands‑on Allen‑Bradley PLCs. This is an Allen‑Bradley house, not a Siemens house, so real Allen‑Bradley depth carries the most weight. SCADA. Genuine SCADA experience matters more here than panel wiring; you own the systems that watch and run the plant. Industrial networking. Real network experience counts, because the site is investing in network monitoring and IT/OT security, and that is where this role grows. Own, modify, and troubleshoot control systems across the site: PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and industrial control networks. Work predominantly in Allen‑Bradley, with FactoryTalk, Wonderware, and InTouch on the HMI and visualization side. Diagnose automation issues to cut downtime and improve equipment reliability, then implement long‑term fixes. Lead the site's network‑monitoring and operational‑technology (OT) security work, including network segmentation. Serve as automation lead on system upgrades, new line installations, and equipment integrations. Run root cause analysis with maintenance, operations, and engineering. Manage controls vendors and system integrators, including parts selection and quoting. Keep work compliant with safety standards, electrical codes, and OSHA requirements. Hands‑on Allen‑Bradley PLC experience, plus breadth across HMIs, SCADA, and controls troubleshooting (not a single‑platform silo). 4+ years of controls or automation experience, ideally in a manufacturing environment. Stable tenure: at least one role of 3+ years in your recent history. This is not a fit for frequent job changers; it takes 18 to 24 months to get fully up to speed here. A BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Industrial Controls, OR equivalent hands‑on controls experience backed by relevant certifications and training. We weigh proven skills over a diploma. Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship, now or in the future (US citizen or green card holder). Background in chemicals, paper, food processing, or other heavy‑industrial automation. IT/OT integration and industrial cybersecurity (network segmentation, OT monitoring). FactoryTalk, Wonderware, or InTouch on the HMI and visualization side. Led automation‑related capital or improvement projects. Vendor and system‑integrator coordination. We moved the pay up and the benefits are genuinely uncommon.
