Assistant Controller

Job Description Assistant Controller role supports the Chief Accounting Officer and leads the day-to-day accounting operations for a high-volume, multi-entity retail environment. The position oversees core accounting functions, drives process improvements, supports month‑end and year‑end close, and serves as a key leader across financial reporting, compliance, audit coordination, and team management. Job Title Assistant Controller Responsibilities Lead daily accounting operations across financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, audit support, and tax compliance. Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, variance analyses, reconciliations, and closing entries. Oversee external financial and sales/use tax audits and serve as a primary point of contact for auditors. Provide hands‑on leadership for a large accounting team, including mentoring, coaching, performance management, and prioritization of department workflows. Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and written policies while identifying and implementing process improvements. Partner cross‑functionally with operations, purchasing, advertising, real estate, e‑commerce, and store leadership to support business needs and initiatives. Support periodic physical inventory activities and help standardize reporting tools, analytics, and templates for the broader accounting function. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership of accounting teams. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations, and month‑end close processes. Proven experience building and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Demonstrated leadership, communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills. Experience with ERP systems. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including lookups, queries, and pivot tables. Hands‑on experience with financial statements, journal entries, general ledger, accounts receivable, and broader accounting operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience in a retail or high‑volume multi‑location environment. Experience supporting tax compliance, external audit activity, and multi‑state operations. Experience with data analysis, reporting tools, and process improvement initiatives. Ability to operate in a hands‑on leadership role while balancing strategic oversight with day‑to‑day execution. Job Type & Location Permanent position based out of Pontiac, MI. Pay & Benefits Pay range: $92,000.00 – $110,000.00 per year.
