Position Overview This position exists to (1) oversee the local functioning of corporate operational systems; (2) develop and expand the revenue performance and business potential of the hospice; (3) be responsible for the patient and family services program at the hospice; (4) represent the company in the community. Responsibilities Overseeing the local functioning of corporate operational systems. By implementing the company’s systems, policies, and standards, the general manager ensures that the hospice meets and exceeds all applicable regulatory requirements and is ready for inspections, surveys, and reviews, including state licensure, federal certifications, and accreditations. Maintain a working knowledge of and ensure program management adheres to the Medicare Conditions of Participation. Supervise compliance of all administrative functions and policies with applicable regulatory agencies, keeping personnel records up-to-date for Medicare surveys. Maintain a working knowledge of all applicable federal and state regulations, statutes, and VITAS policies and procedures, including staying up-to-date on the changing healthcare environment. Coordinate with corporate staff, medical director, PCA and/or team manager, and admissions manager for all activities necessary to assure readiness for an onsite survey by regulatory agencies. Coordinate with VPO, Regional Medical Director, NPCA, RDMD, and other corporate resources for guidance and support. Develop and expand revenue performance: Use sharp negotiating skills when pursuing contractual agreements with community partners and vendors to ensure favorable program outcomes. Based on the corporate business plan and revenue budget, develop and maintain key relationships with hospitals, nursing homes, physicians and other healthcare organizations. Manage implementation of contracts to ensure discharge planning and case review functions are understood and agreed to, implemented with positive results, and in compliance with applicable state and federal law. Establish collegial, ongoing relationships with senior management of contracting entities to promote efficient functioning of contracts. Manage hospice financial functions, including monthly profit and loss statements, accounts receivable, collections, and local accounts payable processes. Develop and maintain relationships with physicians, initiating new relationships and improving existing ones through ongoing contact, complaint resolution, educational services, and refining patient care services. Supervise the admissions function through the admissions manager. Responsible for supervision of day‑to‑day operation of the program utilizing the company’s business intelligence tools, including but not limited to: Financial Management Recruitment/Employment Process Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Payroll Admissions Business Office Operations Medical Staff Systems Operations Business Plan Development Human Resource Policy Staff Development Responsible for the patient and family services program at the hospice. The general manager has overall responsibility for the clinical services function at the hospice across settings: Program Staffing Levels Patient Experience Employee Recruitment, Retention, and Engagement Volunteer Program management and quality compliance. Oversee program CAHPS performance to ensure quality patient experience. Act as the official spokesperson of the company in the community; manage public relations, generate and respond to media requests in coordination with the corporate communication department, respond to social media comments, and handle and resolve complaints from patients, families, and the public. Other Tasks As assigned. Qualifications Five (5) years of previous managerial experience. Previous healthcare sales management experience. Working knowledge of budget development, financial profit/loss processes, and human resources. Ability to relate to superiors, peers, and subordinates. Education Bachelor’s degree required.
