After School Lead Teacher- Bilingual (Spanish/English)

Job Overview 
At Providence Center's Power After-School Program, children in grades K-8 build resiliency, learn to make safe and positive choices, and strengthen their motivation and skills to achieve personal goals under the supervision of caring staff. The Lead Teacher will be responsible for a classroom of 12-15 children grades K-8. As a dual youth program, our young children are tutored and mentored by paid Teen Leaders from local high schools. Lead Teachers play a large role in coaching/mentoring the teen leaders and volunteers who mentor the children; delegating tasks and helping develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills. 
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Provide a safe, supportive educational environment for children and youth. 

• Supervise children during school pick-up, snack, homework time, group activities, and field trips 

• Submit weekly lesson plans to the Director focusing primarily on social and emotional learning, literacy-building skills, and project-based learning.  

• Coach Teen Leaders who assist in the afterschool classroom to build social, emotional, and workplace skills, and provide opportunities for Teen Leaders to have a leadership role in daily activities.   

• Coordinate with youth program team to observe, support, and report student progress. 
• Participate in Providence Center staff meetings and professional development. 
• Use materials, activities, and affirmative feedback consistent with the mission, values, and framework of the after-school program. 

Role Requirements: 
1. A Lead Teacher shall have attained one of the following qualification levels: 
A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field and 600 or more hours of a post-secondary training related to child development or education 
OR
(B)  A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, 15 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field and 1 calendar year of experience with children. 
OR
(C)  A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 2 calendar years of experience with children. 

2. Clearances : Pennsylvania Child Abuse, Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Check, FBI, as required by the Department of Human Services, National Sex Offender Registry, and any applicable out-of-state clearances  

3. Bilingual: English/Spanish  

Soft Skills Required: 

• Demonstrated track record of excellent attendance and punctuality in previous child care, education, or youth development roles.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to build positive rapport with a diverse range of students, parents, staff, and community stakeholders.

• Problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and adapt to changing situations. 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

• Some experience in teaching or curriculum development, and in creating a fun and safe learning environment 

• Familiarity with systemic issues in education in urban environments

• Strong understanding of child development, trauma-informed practices, and behavior management

 

Benefits: 

• Sick leave- Accrue 1 hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked (per Philadelphia paid sick leave law) 
• Reimbursement for any work-related travel outside of Providence Center. 
• This position is not eligible for health insurance.

Location and Schedule

• In-person, Philadelphia, PA 19133; remote work available on non-program days
• 20 hours, Monday to Friday
• Must be available to report to site by 3:00 pm
