Cardiac Surgical Technologist

Job Summary:

The Cardiac Surgical Technologist provides specialized technical support in the Adult Cardiac Operating Room, preparing instruments, equipment, and supplies for cardiac surgical procedures including CABG, TAVI, VAD, ECMO, artificial heart, and heart transplants. The technologist assists the surgical team from the scrub position, maintains sterile technique, and ensures proper handling of surgical instruments and pharmacologic agents under RN supervision. This role requires a minimum of two years recent experience in a cardiac OR setting. Responsibilities:

• Prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for cardiac surgical procedures.
• Assist surgical team from the scrub position during operations.
• Maintain sterile technique and ensure safe handling of sharps.
• Perform surgical counts in accordance with hospital policies.
• Facilitate operating room turnover between cases.
• Handle solutions and pharmacologic agents properly under RN direction.
• Support multidisciplinary care for patients of all ages undergoing cardiac surgery.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• NBSTSA Certification or 10 years of experience as a Surgical Technician.
• Minimum of two years recent experience in a cardiac operating room.
• Ability to scrub and circulate during surgical procedures.
• BLS Certification from the American Heart Association.
• Operating room experience in a level 1 trauma center preferred.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience with cardiac surgical procedures such as CABG, TAVI, VAD, ECMO, artificial heart, and heart transplants.
• Certification or licensure specific to New York State (Tech License NY only).

Special Considerations:

• Must maintain sterile technique and adhere to hospital surgical count policies.
• Work involves handling pharmacologic agents under RN supervision.
• On-call, weekend, holiday, and rotating day/evening/night shifts as per unit needs.
• Exposure to high acuity cardiac patients requiring multidisciplinary care.

Scheduling:

• 36 or 48 hours per week with day, evening, and night rotation.
• Weekend and holiday shifts required.
• Shift assignments determined by unit staffing needs.
