Department of Global Health The Department of Global Health at the University of Washington, within the School of Medicine (SOM) and the School of Public Health (SPH), is a joint venture founded in January 2007. It has 67 core faculty, 227 adjunct/affiliate/clinical faculty, 177 staff, 341 students and an annual budget of approximately $100 million with projected research revenues of $60 million for AY25/26. Position Overview This position reports to the Department Chair, the Vice Dean of Administration and Operations in SOM, and the Associate Dean of Finance and Administration in SPH. The Director of Finance and Administration serves as the business manager, senior administrative and managerial support for the Department, overseeing financial, operational, HR, IT, research, compliance, risk and educational program management. Duties and Responsibilities Financial Management and Development Activities (20%). Maintain working knowledge of and direct department financial operations, funding sources, policies and procedures. Facilitate faculty and staff in achieving scientific and educational goals. Interpret policies and regulations governing department finances and ensure compliance with university, federal, state and sponsor guidelines. Develop and implement internal financial system controls to ensure integrity of all transactions. Operations and Facilities Management (20%). Coordinate and direct day‑to‑day administrative activities for departmental operations. Integrate operational requirements of UW, SPH and SOM into departmental planning and policies. Implement change‑management processes that account for organizational dynamics and regulatory requirements. Build and sustain internal and external partnerships to advance strategic initiatives. Plan, resource, monitor and evaluate operational programs; prepare reports and recommend program changes. Oversee allocation, planning and management of departmental space, including offices, laboratories and research facilities. Coordinate office and laboratory moves, relocations and space modifications. Develop long‑range space plans and collaborate with Chair and Dean on business plans and space requests. Apply federal, state, UW, SPH and SOM policies related to facilities, safety and capital resources. Maintain security, environmental controls and safety protocols across all spaces. Coordinate with campus facilities teams for timely maintenance and compliance. Research Management (15%). Design and implement administrative procedures for grant and contract administration. Integrate federal, state, industry and private policies on research activities. Assist faculty with procurement of sponsorship, pre‑submission, IRB, animal‑research requirements and grant submission. Review and approve all department grant and contract applications. Educational Program Management (15%). Support program directors and faculty in program administration, including supervision of support staff. Identify financial and other resources to support educational programs. Adjust departmental policies to align with professional and educational guidelines. Support accreditation, certification and training‑grant renewals; manage changes per Graduate School, SOM and SPH. Respond to inquiries from students and the public about educational and research programs. Human Resource Management (10%). Interpret and integrate federal, state, UW, SPH, SOM and local policies on HR for faculty, staff, postdocs and academic employees. Respond to and assist with needs and requirements for employees. Information Management (10%). Manage website and digital presence covering services, research, faculty bios, publications and training. Develop written communication materials, including newsletters, brochures and public‑relations content. Coordinate and participate in fundraising events and donor relations. Ensure IT architecture is viable, secure and aligned with configuration‑management plans. Compliance and Risk Management (10%). Interpret and integrate federal, state, and industry laws on corporate compliance, fraud and anti‑kickback. Maintain security measures for spaces, laboratories and information to mitigate risk. Minimum Qualifications • Minimum 5 years experience and a Master’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Public Health, or a related field. Other Required Qualifications Management‑level administrative experience, preferably in a research institution or academic medical center. Direct supervisory experience. Competence in financial operations, business planning, financial analysis and strategic planning. Experience with large, highly structured personnel systems. Leadership, communication, team‑building and problem‑solving skills. Diplomatic and effective handling of complex administrative issues. Strong employee‑relations skills and experience with diverse faculty and staff. Ability to work independently, show initiative and collaborate as part of a team.
