Regular travel to other company office locations is required to support business operations and meet the demands of the business.

The Ophthalmic Technician II will perform all duties and functions of an Ophthalmic Technician I. Effective execution of this role will require the ability to multitask and respond to the needs of the patients, doctors, and other staff efficiently and calmly. The Ophthalmic Technician II may also be required to support training efforts of other clinical staff as needed.
Responsibilities
- Make introductions and establish rapport with patients
- Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines
- Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extra ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assess angles, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including specialty tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, and dry eye testing
- Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT) corneal topography and pachymetry.
- Additional testing as requested by doctor
- Perform refractometry and assist with minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office
- Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full documentation in patient chart
- Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician
- Maintain and conduct inventory of medications and supplies
- Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment
- Clean surgical instruments in preparation for sterile processing
- Inspect instruments periodically for damage, send for repair, and request a replacement, as necessary
- Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner and as per office procedures, battery powered instruments are seated properly in re-charge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off under covers
- Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines
- Must prioritize building and maintaining a positive relationship with doctors and clinical colleagues
- May be required to assist with training other clinical staff
- Executes duties of position in a professional and courteous manner
- Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner
- Perform other tasks and duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Proficient with medical and ophthalmic terminology
- Strong organization with attention to detail
- Ability to accurately check visual acuity, applanation, history taking, pupil assessment, EOM’s, and confrontation field of vision
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, staff, managers, and doctors
- Basic computer literacy required
- Highly energetic with a positive attitude
- Must be willing to travel to other offices occasionally to meet the demands of business
- Must be able to walk and stand for eight hours
- Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly lit setting
- Five years as Ophthalmic Technician required
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred
- Certified Ophthalmic Scribe (OSC) preferred
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred
- Two-three years in multi-specialty clinic preferred
- Must be proficient with the following skills:
- History taking
- Visual Acuities
- IOP (via applanation tonometry and tonopen)
- Auto Refraction
- Manual Refraction (plus and minus cyl)
- Lensometry
- Topography
- Knowledge of Ophthalmic Surgical Procedures (Cataract Surgery, LASIK, CXL, SLT, Yag Capsulotomy, iStent, Trabeculectomy, etc.)
- Knowledge of ophthalmology billing/coding preferred
