Radiologic Technologist

The Radiologic Technologist performs diagnostic general radiological procedures utilizing various imaging equipment to assist in the diagnosis of diseases and injuries. The technologist performs radiographic procedures by acquiring and processing patient exams in accordance with established guidelines and department protocols. They review cases with the radiologist when appropriate. They assess labs and patient history to ensure the correct exam is performed. The technologist administers IV contrast and oral or rectal contrast as needed. They recognize and respond to any adverse or allergic reactions. Administering IV contrast material can be done through an existing IV line or by performing veni-puncture. They screen patients for the possibility of pregnancy and perform pregnancy testing if applicable. The technologist is responsible for reviewing radiology orders for completeness and accuracy. They evaluate patient history and supporting clinical data for medical necessity. If necessary, they acquire additional information from patients, ordering providers, or the radiologist. The technologist demonstrates acceptable imaging quality standards through critiquing positioning, technical factors, and alignment. They review patient data for accuracy, quality, and completeness. Image data is transferred and verified in PACS and relevant medical history is provided for the radiologist's interpretation. The technologist utilizes web servers and email systems to send exams for preliminary readings after hours. They are responsible for maintaining imaging equipment and the workplace environment, including supply inventories and the orderliness of the work area. Recognizing malfunctions and service needs is essential, and they must report these needs in a timely manner. Ensuring patient, visitor, and environmental safety is a key responsibility. The technologist must report safety events immediately, including near misses. They assist in instructing students and new staff as necessary. In the absence of leadership, they may perform duties of Rad Tech Lead or Imaging Coordinator. Meeting productivity levels established by departmental benchmarks is required. During downtimes, the technologist may assist other areas to maintain productivity. They may also be required to perform duties of other modalities within the department for which they are licensed. Compliance with job descriptions of cross-trained modalities performed within the department is expected. Secondary registries for cross-trained modalities are not required unless specified by compliance, licensure, or accrediting bodies.
