Campus Safety and Resource Officer

Overview The Campus Safety and Resource Officer is the first line ambassador to the community, providing various services, offering assistance and direction and ensuring that campus facilities are safe and secure by controlling access, documenting those who enter and monitoring, responding to emergencies and reporting all security, safety and operational concerns. Primary/Principal Responsibilities Reporting to the shift supervisor, the duties of the Campus Safety and Resource Officer include but are not limited to: Acting as a first-line representative and ambassador of the university when encountering and greeting members of the university community including students, faculty, staff, alumni, invited guests, vendors and members of the general public. This includes: Greeting each person who enters a university facility in a friendly and welcoming manner. Providing high-touch support and assistance to community members including: Providing directions and relevant information to assist community members and guests with wayfinding. Providing general university information including operating hours, contact information, and other general university information to the community as provided through training and directive. Being aware of the events of the day and assisting and directing attendees and others who inquire. Assisting community members and guests with accessing the services of other departments as needed by contacting other offices, communicating on community members behalf and/or directing them to the correct resource. Serving as a friendly and helpful resource by answering telephones and providing assistance to callers and visitors with various needs, such as: Documenting requests for assistance to be handled by the Campus Safety and Resource Team or another campus partner and relaying to the shift supervisor to ensure the appropriate response. Providing information including campus access hours, library hours, assistance with locating and connecting with specific departments or events, etc. Monitoring, facilitating and providing access control for entry and exit of individuals with business on campus to ensure safety: Requesting that all university community members present and, whenever available, electronically swipe/tap their University identification to enter. Verifying that the identification presented is valid and that the individual is not prohibited from entry according to procedures. Notifying the supervisor of entry of individuals who are flagged but not banned when appropriate. Checking-in university guests who do not have IDs according to a prescribed process to ensure proper documentation and that prohibited individuals are not admitted. Providing denied-entry individuals with contact information to inquire about status when requested. Providing assistance to locate specific university departments, individuals or events by verbal directions, escorting, or supplying printed/electronic resources. Observing activities on campus (in person and via CCTV) and promptly reporting unsafe, illegal or nefarious activity to the shift supervisor. Providing support to the campus community by acting as a liaison in support of campus operations: Reporting facilities-related concerns (leaks, hazards, damage, alarms, graffiti, abnormal temperatures, malfunctioning equipment, etc.) to the shift supervisor. Welcoming reports of facilities-related concerns and relaying them to the shift supervisor. Requesting assistance from the University Police Department for needs such as Lost and Found, safety escorts, and other police-related inquiries via the shift supervisor. Responding to calls for service as directed by the shift supervisor (e.g., lockouts, opening/closing doors, lighting, investigations, deliveries, etc.). Supporting emergency responses for fire alarms, medical emergencies or other emergent conditions by facilitating access and information to responding agencies. Providing first aid within the standard of care per training and requesting EMS when appropriate. Carrying out interior and/or exterior inspections of campus facilities as directed, and logging/reporting findings with supervisor guidance. Giving verbal safety directives to students, faculty, staff and visitors to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. Verbal detention of offenders of University safety policies where applicable, and involving University Police if necessary. Evacuating campus facilities when required, including directing occupants, leading to assembly areas and conducting head counts. Assisting residential students with issues such as contacting the Resident Assistant, helping with lockouts, and reporting facilities concerns via the work order system or shift supervisor. Monitoring security equipment (CCTV and fire alarm systems) and reporting conditions requiring investigation or response. Creating University Identification Cards when needed and documenting card requests for billing purposes. Documentation and related activities: using authorized software for documentation, completing Incident Reports, maintaining shift logs with required entries, and performing data entry and reporting as prescribed. Taking photographs as part of documenting incidents or conditions. Staying assigned to a specific location when not otherwise dispatched by the shift supervisor. Minimum Requirements/Qualifications Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must be 18 years of age. Must be available to work any shift as assigned, including voluntary and required overtime. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. No prior felony record. Ability to remain calm and task-focused in varying environments. Ability to read, write and speak English at a level sufficient to converse in a higher education setting, read and apply complex information, and write clear, concise reports. Ability to use a personal computer and learn/operate software for data entry, reporting and ID card processes. Willingness and capacity to complete university training including Massachusetts First Responder certification (105 CMR 171), Mental Health First Aid, Title VI and Title IX training, and maintain these certifications as a condition of employment. Preferred: valid American Heart Association CPR and First Aid certification. Physical Activities Sitting and standing for extended periods Walking for extended periods and running to expedite responses Walking up and down stairs Lifting or assisting to lift a person Pulling/pushing a person Utilizing senses (sight, sound, touch, etc.) Work Environment Ability to work inside and outside in all weather, flexible hours including rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays; on-call and overtime as needed. Uniforms/equipment provided and required to be worn; equipment remains university property and must be returned on request or separation. Prohibition of personal devices on duty without supervisor permission. Confidentiality of information, including FERPA/HIPAA considerations; compliance with university directives on handling confidential information. No media disclosures; refer media inquiries to Public Affairs Office. Adherence to university procedures and ongoing updates; maintain current procedures. Fraternization with registered students is prohibited. Note: Security Officers do not have arrest authority as Special State Police Officers. Other: The use of tobacco products while on duty is prohibited.
