Law Clerk – Office of the General Counsel – Huntsville/Austin I. JOB SUMMARY Performs complex legal research and analysis work. Works involve examining, preparing, and evaluating legal documents, conducting legal research, and providing assistance to attorneys. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Researches and analyzes legal sources—including statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, land titles, and various rules and regulations; reviews drafts of laws, rules and regulations affecting agency operations; provides research on bills and amendments for legislative consideration. Assists attorneys in providing legal advice and counsel; assists in preparation for hearings, trials, meetings, interviews, appellate arguments, depositions, and docket calls. Assists in preparing, reviewing, and editing legal opinions, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, summary judgments, and other legal documents; ensures timely filings of legal documents. Provides liaison with other departments, agencies, organizations, and the public; prepares presentations and participates in case conferences. Provides technical assistance to others. Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed. III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A. Education, Experience, and Training Completion of one year of law school accredited by an organization recognized by the CHEA, USDE, or ABA. Legal work experience preferred. B. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings. Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes preferred. Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred. Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely. Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public. Skill in problem‑solving techniques. Skill in the use of computers and related equipment. Skill to conduct legal research and investigations. Skill to interpret court documents and correspondence. Skill to evaluate and relate findings to cases. Skill to plan work in order to meet established deadlines. IV. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS WITH OR WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 15 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment. Work conditions include working inside, around machines with moving parts and moving objects, radiant and electrical energy, working closely with others, working alone, working protracted or irregular hours, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane. Equipment used in performing essential functions includes computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, dolly, and automobile.
