Lift Station Maintenance Technician

The Water & Wastewater Maintenance Technician performs construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, inspection, and repair of water and wastewater utility systems, equipment, lift stations, collection and distribution systems, and company facilities.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with lift stations, water distribution systems, pumps, motors, piping, electrical and mechanical equipment, and other water and wastewater infrastructure. This position requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a team while responding to scheduled maintenance activities and emergency service calls.

Minimum Requirements
  • Previous lift station experience required.
  • Previous experience working with water distribution systems.
  • Previous water and wastewater utility experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing aptitude.
  • Previous utility maintenance experience.
  • Experience working in confined spaces.
  • Previous experience operating or working around heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work safely around mechanical, electrical, chemical, and other utility-related hazards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the public.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Investigate utility systems and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and piping problems based on experience, training, and direction from the Lead Maintenance Mechanic or Lead Technician.
  • Pull, inspect, repair, and analyze mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, submersible pumps, and related components.
  • Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater utility system improvements and infrastructure.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on utility equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance calls and service requests as assigned.
  • Maintain equipment associated with water treatment plants, wastewater facilities, collection systems, lift stations, and water distribution systems.
  • Operate company vehicles and maintain the cleanliness, organization, and proper inventory of assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Work with other maintenance employees to efficiently utilize labor, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Complete and maintain accurate work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, and other required documentation.
  • Assist with meter reading, cleaning and clearing activities, painting, project punch-out activities, loading and unloading materials, and other utility-related duties.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes, excavators, tractors, and related equipment, when trained and designated to do so.
  • Perform routine lift station inspections, including:
    • Cleaning and maintaining lift station facilities.
    • Properly setting and checking level controls.
    • Cleaning wet well walls and surrounding areas.
    • Recording hour meter readings and calculating pump run times.
    • Trimming and removing grass, weeds, and other vegetation as needed.
    • Testing alarm and communication systems.
    • Identifying and reporting abnormal conditions to the Lead Technician.
  • Perform manhole inspections and complete required inspection documentation while meeting established inspection quantities.
  • Perform fire hydrant maintenance, including flushing, greasing, painting, inspection, and documentation.
  • Identify potential equipment, safety, environmental, and operational issues and report them to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

The employee must possess the strength, stamina, mobility, and coordination necessary to perform medium to heavy physical work in wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, collection systems, distribution systems, and related facilities.

The position requires the ability to:

  • Work in confined spaces and around operating machinery.
  • Climb and descend ladders and stairs.
  • Frequently walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, construction equipment, and utility maintenance equipment.
  • Read gauges, meters, printed materials, inspection documents, and computer screens.
  • Identify utility components, equipment, and appurtenances.
  • Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, radio, and other communication devices.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds and heavier loads with the use of appropriate equipment and assistance.
  • Perform fieldwork for extended periods and respond to maintenance and emergency service requirements.
