SAU 70 Sustainability CoordinatorThe Sustainability Coordinator, working closely with the CAP (Climate Action Plan) Implementation Team, will manage projects that have outcomes consistent with the SAU 70 district-wide CAP. This will involve working with the Facilities Department, the Superintendent's office, the school boards, building principals, staff, and students. The position may require occasional weekend and evening hours to support program initiatives.Part time, a minimum of 10 hours per month with additional hours on a project basis for the 2026-2027 school year. Option to work off site remotely. Position runs Fall 2026 - June 30, 2027, starts immediately.General Purpose: The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and implementing the improvement of various practices in order to benefit economic, energy, environmental, and social sustainability among the schools in the SAU 70 School Districts.Reports to: Superintendent and/or Assistant SuperintendentA description of the project: The Sustainability Coordinator will be tasked to coordinate and network between schools, local organizations, and community groups and will work towards the long term goal of implementing the SAU 70 Climate Action Plan (CAP). Areas to pursue will include research into optimal energy pathways, making connections between the school district and other community and regional bodies.A primary goal of the sustainability coordinator will be to help identify common projects that link the four district schools. This will support district efforts to make progress on addressing the goals in the CAP.The Sustainability Coordinator will collaborate with students and teacher leaders of environmental groups at each of the SAU 70 schools. Over time, as they matriculate through the district, students will develop their environmental literacy and ability to take action. A critical piece will include exploring and providing support for development of environmental education and experiential learning opportunities for students and staff across the district.Responsibilities may include:Collaborate with and mentors students and teacher leaders of environmental groups at each of the SAU 70 schools.Coordinate and facilitate students at District schools to engage in sustainability projects towards meeting the objectives set forth by the SAU 70 CAP.Involve students with the CAP implementation team to give students insight on networking, community involvement, and gathering resources to solve big problems.Forge relationships with members of the larger community to involve students with networks to pursue successful sustainability projects.Provide support for development of environmental education curriculum and experiential learning opportunities for students and staff.Provide curricular resources to teachers to include environmental literacy, place-based education, and transformative collective action and decision-making.May provide presentations to classes, staff, and administrators regarding student projects and curricular initiatives.Work with and report to the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.Serves as a member of the SAU 70 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Committee, helping the Board execute strategic district initiatives and measurable outcomes as described in the Facilities Goal: (Source SAU Strategic Plan)Monitoring of energy use will indicate decreased overall usage, and/or greater usage of clean energy.The districts will reduce their carbon footprint by embracing efficiency measures to the greatest extent possible.Provide Superintendent with a monthly log of activities towards meeting above goals.Requirements:Bachelor's degree or higher in sustainability, environmental studies, solar engineering, or a related field.Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:One year of experience working in a directly related sustainability-focused position.Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively without daily supervision.Experience working with students in a K-12 school system.Completed coursework in urban sustainability, environmental sciences, or related fields.Two years or more of experience working in a position with measurable outcomes (e.g. budget reduction, lowered carbon footprint measurements, reduced utility consumption, grant awards)Strong understanding of school district operations and the decision making process.Must comply with all SAU 70 District policy and building / department rules, procedures, practices and objectives.
