Cooking Specialist, Camp Grossman, Summer Day Camp 2026

Overview Camp Grossman is hiring a Cooking Specialist to lead our culinary program during the full‑time on‑site summer season. The role involves teaching children to cook, guiding campers of all ages through fun, safe, and age‑appropriate cooking activities, and contributing to a memorable summer experience. Responsibilities Plan and lead fun, safe, and age‑appropriate cooking activities ranging from “no‑bake” treats to advanced recipes. Organize, manage, and maintain all equipment and supplies, ensuring proper working order and safety. Coordinate with the Program Director to order and restock supplies during summer operations and complete end‑of‑season inventories. Join all staff in the parking lot in the morning and afternoon to welcome safe arrival and departure of campers. Assist with planning and leading an activity or supporting a cookout, one or two evenings (after regular camp hours) throughout the summer. Standard Staff Expectations Create a welcoming dynamic that values and respects everyone. Participate as an essential team member and attend all required staff meetings. Support JCC Greater Boston’s mission, vision, and values of belonging, joyfulness, collaboration, and transformation through role modeling. Enthusiastically represent the organization, modeling excellence and achievement. Complete all staff payroll, onboarding, and pre‑camp online training modules on time. Complete other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Provide ongoing direction, guidance, mentorship, feedback, and supervision of assistant(s) as needed. Create a facilitative environment where employees achieve individual goals. Build and maintain positive working relationships to support growth of staff. Conduct mid‑summer evaluations of assistants, identifying key growth areas with concrete suggestions. Conduct end‑of‑summer evaluations and provide recommendations for re‑hire. Uphold organizational policies, align work with mission and vision, and report related issues to the Specialist Supervisor or Program Director. Job Details The regular camp season runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday–Friday, from June 29 to August 21 (with option for a 9th week). Specialists attend four staff meetings on Monday afternoons and may work a Sunday Family Day on July 26 and/or one or two evenings (dinner provided). Pay is a starting rate of $16 per hour, adjustable based on qualifications and internal equity. Requirements High‑school graduation strongly preferred. Experience leading children in a subject area is a plus, but not required. Experience working in or attending summer camp is a plus. An equivalent combination of education and experience may satisfy minimum criteria at the JCC’s discretion. Skills and Abilities Enjoys working with children. Has active listening and interpersonal skills. Physical Requirements Must work on‑site in Dover, Massachusetts. Must navigate 70 acres of rugged, uneven, rustic campgrounds independently. Comfortable working outdoors or indoors without air conditioning for most of the day. Capable of handling a busy, dynamic, sometimes noisy environment with multiple tasks. Can lift and carry objects up to 30–40 pounds. Can sit, kneel, and get down at eye level with children regularly.
