Role Profile

Position: Head of Communications & Engagement Compensation: £45,000 pro rata Work pattern: Part-time 50% FTE Pattern TBD Reports to: Chief Executive Location: Home Based, with travel as required Responsible for: Ensuring consistent, accurate and engaging communication that enhances member experience, drives engagement and reinforces BASI's standing as a respected industry body with a worldwide footprint.

Purpose The Head of Communications & Engagement shapes and delivers BASI's communications strategy, improving the quality, consistency and reach of communication with members, partners and the public. The postholder promotes membership value, strengthens engagement and enhances BASI's digital and brand presence in the UK and internationally. Working across the Association, they ensure important changes, services, events and campaigns are organised and communicated clearly, accurately and in a way that supports BASI's strategic objectives.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Strategic Communications• Develop and deliver an annual communications plan aligned with BASI's strategic objectives.• Coordinate messaging across functions on qualification changes, events, membership benefits, organisational developments and public campaigns.• Support the Chief Executive and Executive Team with strategic narrative, major announcements and external briefing guidance.• Maintain clear editorial standards so BASI communications are consistent, accurate, timely and appropriate for their audience.

Member and Venue Engagement• Lead communications that increase member engagement with BASI's digital platforms, news, events and programmes.• Deliver member-facing campaigns that support renewals, community participation and awareness of membership value.• Create and lead engagement events regionally and in partnership with UK venues• Use member feedback and engagement insight to improve communication priorities, content and channel effectiveness.• Lead the Committee of Representatives Subcommittee with the Members' Director, ensuring papers are ready at least two weeks before meetings and outputs at least two weeks before Board pre-reading.

Digital & Content Leadership• Manage BASI's external digital presence, including website content, social media, email newsletters and public blogs.• Oversee content planning, creation, scheduling and quality, ensuring material is clear, relevant and accessible.• Plan website and community forum communications using user feedback and available analytics.• Maintain a coordinated content calendar and work with colleagues and subject matter experts to secure accurate input.

Publications & Organisational Reporting • Lead production of BASI's Annual Report in partnership with the Company Secretary, ensuring quality, accuracy and alignment with organisational goals.• Prepare communications supporting Board reporting, significant organisational announcements and member updates.• Lead media handling and press relations, responding calmly and accurately to enquiries and time-critical issues.• Protect and strengthen BASI's reputation through clear messaging, appropriate escalation and disciplined approval of external communications.

Leadership & Collaboration• Be the principal communications partner to the Chief Executive and a trusted adviser to the Executive Team.• Build constructive relationships across BASI so communications reflect operational reality and support shared priorities.• Work with technical experts, volunteers and ambassadors to ensure consultation, accuracy and message consistency.• Promote a member-first, evidence-informed and continuously improving approach to communications and engagement.

Key Relationships

• Chief Executive: strategic narrative, organisational communication, major announcements and reputation.• Executive Team: coordinated communication of services, projects, qualification changes, events and member benefits.• Board and governance subcommittees: consultation, reporting, pre-reading and communication of agreed outcomes.• Members' Director and Committee of Representatives: member insight, representative engagement and subcommittee delivery.• Subject matter experts, volunteers and ambassadors: accurate input, consultation and consistent messaging.• External partners, media and public audiences: clear information, relationship management and promotion of BASI's work.

Required Skills & Experience

Essential • Substantial experience in communications and engagement, ideally within a membership body, professional association or not-for-profit organisation.• Outstanding writing and editing skills, with the ability to turn complex information into clear messages for different audiences.• Experience managing digital channels, including websites, email and social media.• Proven media-handling and press-relations capability.• Experience planning campaigns, coordinating content and maintaining effective editorial standards.• Strong stakeholder-management skills and confidence working collaboratively with senior leaders, colleagues, experts and volunteers.• Ability to use feedback and analytics to improve engagement and communication outcomes.• Sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to remain calm when handling sensitive or time-critical communications.

Desirable • Experience in sport, outdoor activity, education or a professional membership environment.• Knowledge of CRM, email-marketing and analytics platforms.• Experience drafting formal reports, annual reports and member publications.• Experience supporting governance processes or working with Boards and committees.• Understanding of communications to international audiences or within a standards-led professional environment.
