Position Details Department: Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Location: Winthrop, Maine Job Class Code: 3065 Grade: 25 (Professional & Technical) Salary: $54,412.80 to $76,315.20 per year Opening Date: June 26, 2026 Closing Date: July 10, 2026 Position Numbers: 02024-1592, 02024-1041, 02000-3202, 02000-2539, 02000-2214 Overview Disability Determination Services is hiring a Disability Claims Adjudicator to review and adjudicate Social Security Disability benefits claims. The role involves collecting and analyzing medical, psychiatric, and vocational evidence, collaborating with medical professionals, conducting vocational work analysis, and making determinations. Training is provided and a remote option of up to 3 days per week is available after 8-12 months. Core Responsibilities Collect, review, examine, and analyze medical, psychiatric, and vocational reconsideration appeals, continuing benefits applications, and complex initial applications to determine eligibility and benefit payments. Determine eligibility for disability benefits according to federal regulations and complete written determinations. Determine eligibility for advanced payments for claimants with severe disabilities. Contact and interview claimants and physicians to obtain evidence. Authorize and arrange for consultations and examinations to meet program requirements. Write detailed letters to claimants, medical consultants, and agencies to request information and communicate decisions. Assign codes to written decisions for statistical reporting. Perform additional duties such as quality assurance, mentoring, training, professional relations, processing Canadian claims, and other special projects as needed. Minimum Qualifications Intermediate education, training, or experience in research, investigation, data analysis, or creating comprehensive reports.
