Medical Assistant

Position Overview The Medical Assistant is a key member of the clinical care team at the Gavin J. Goorjian Community Health Center. This role supports providers with clinical and administrative duties, including rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, performing phlebotomy and point‑of‑care testing, administering medications within scope, assisting with procedures, updating the electronic health record, and coordinating follow‑up care. The Medical Assistant helps ensure safe, respectful, efficient, and patient‑centered care throughout the visit. Key Responsibilities Room patients and obtain and document vital signs and relevant clinical information. Prepare patients for examinations and assist providers during examinations and procedures. Administer injections and medications as directed by licensed healthcare providers and within scope of practice. Perform phlebotomy and collect, label, and prepare laboratory specimens. Perform basic diagnostic and point‑of‑care testing as trained and authorized. Assist with minor procedures and provide appropriate follow‑up instructions as directed by the provider. Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record. Provide patient instructions related to specimen collection, medications, treatments, and preventive care as directed by the clinical team. Coordinate follow‑up appointments, referrals, and other care needs with the appropriate clinic staff. Maintain clinical supplies, monitor inventory, and assist with ordering as needed. Maintain clean, organized, and patient‑ready clinical areas and follow infection prevention and safety procedures. Answer patient calls and messages as assigned and communicate concerns to the appropriate provider or team member. Collaborate with providers, front office staff, and other members of the care team to support coordinated patient care. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and other applicable clinical and organizational requirements. Participate in staff meetings, training, and other organizational activities as required. All other duties as assigned. Knowledge & Skills Strong clinical skills within the Medical Assistant scope of practice. Knowledge of medical terminology, basic clinical procedures, infection prevention, and patient safety practices. Proficiency with electronic health record systems and standard computer applications. Strong organizational, prioritization, and time‑management skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced outpatient healthcare environment. Clear, professional, and compassionate communication with patients and care team members. Ability to maintain accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred. Qualifications Previous experience in an outpatient, primary care, sexual health, HIV, or similar clinical setting preferred. Experience with phlebotomy, injections, point‑of‑care testing, and electronic health records preferred. Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Educational/Licensure Requirements Educational Requirements Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required. Licensure Requirements Current, active, non‑restricted Medical Assistant certification required. Physical Requirements The ability to: Remain seated and work at a computer for extended periods. Use a computer, keyboard, mouse, and telephone regularly. Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and via video conferencing. Occasionally stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift office or clinical materials. Lift and carry items weighing up to 10–25 pounds occasionally. Travel locally or overnight, if required by the position.
