Registered Nurse - Ambulatory Surgery

It’s more than a career, it’s a calling at WI‑SSM Health Outpatient Center‑Madison. Worker type: Regular. Job Details Department: Ambulatory Surgery. Schedule: 32 hours per week, full time. All shifts are 8‑hour periods with varied start times between 6:00am and 10:30am. No weekends, nights, holidays, or call shifts required. Job Summary Assesses, plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing care for surgical patients. Responsibilities Accepts patient care assignments as directed. Communicates with clinical area team members appropriately. Performs all appropriate nursing aspects of patient assessment using subjective and objective data. Communicates effectively with patients to assess their knowledge of surgical/invasive procedures and expectations. Adheres to universal protocol. Involves patient/significant others in their plan of care, education, discharge planning, and prioritization of needs. Utilizes available teaching resources as appropriate and identifies or refers patients/families as needed. Plans for patient care or intervenes by demonstrating basic nursing skills, observing and accurately documenting patient response to care. Evaluates care by conducting ongoing assessments to identify the effectiveness of interventions, performs post‑op calls following surgical procedures, and analyzes verbal responses from patient and family during hospitalization. Makes competent clinical decisions and knows when to involve management or other team members. Assists in all areas of surgical services as needed. Provides information to the physician regarding changes in patient condition in a timely manner. Documents care given and patient response in a timely manner. Correctly and efficiently administers medications, treatments, and nursing interventions per hospital policy. Applies evidence‑based practice and scientific knowledge to surgical nursing practice, ensuring care is delivered based on patient’s age‑specific and clinical needs. Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing. No prior experience required. Physical Requirements Constant use of speech to share information orally. Constant standing and walking. Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0‑25lb. Frequent sitting, reaching, and keyboard use/data entry. Frequent use of vision and depth perception for near (20inches or less) and far (20feet or more) distances and to identify and distinguish colors. Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors. Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication and to distinguish body sounds or alarms. Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25‑50lb. Occasional lifting/moving of patients. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements. Occasional driving. Rare crawling and running. Required Licenses & Certifications Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) or equivalent. Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) – American Heart Association (AHA). Registered Nurse (RN) – Missouri Division of Professional Registration or Compact State. Registered Nurse (RN) – Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN). Registered Nurse (RN) – Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services or Compact State.
