Description:
Expectations for a Registered Respiratory Therapist in Pediatrics include proficiency in the following categories as applicable:


Medicated Aerosol Therapy.
- Small volume nebulizers.
- Breath actuated nebulizer.
- Vibrating mesh nebulizers.
- Patient education for aerosol, MDI, DPI therapy.
- DPI, MDI and holding chamber.
- Pentamidine administration.
- Medication carts and barcoding medication administration.


Airway Clearance Therapy.
- Clapping, vibration, and directed cough.
- Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) and oscillatory PEP.
- Hyperinflation therapy (IS, EZPAP).
- High-Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation.
- Intermittent Percussive Ventilation (IPV).
- Acoustic airway clearance.
- Cough assist.


Airway Management.
- Suctioning.
- Tracheostomy care.
- Manual ventilation.
- Ventilator system checks.
- CPAP/BiPAP/NIMV.
- Negative Pressure Ventilation.
- Initiation and management of NAVA.


High Risk Delivery.

Nitric Oxide Protocol Monitoring.
- Pulse oximetry.
- Peak flow meters.
- Capnography.
- Ventilator graphic interpretation.
- Overnight or continuous pulse oximetry and capnography studies.
- Spontaneous breathing trial.
- Transcutaneous CO2 monitoring.


Transport.
- HFNC portable unit.
- T-piece ventilation.
- MRI.
- Internal with assisted ventilation.
- Neonatal rapid response team.
- Nitric oxide transport.


Oxygen and Special Gas Therapy.
- Nasal cannula and oxygen masks.
- High flow nasal cannula.
- Oxygen tanks, blenders, analyzers.
- Inhaled nitric oxide, 2-point calibration and troubleshooting.
- Sub ambient oxygen and Heliox therapy.


Will work in various pediatric settings including neonatal and pediatric intensive care, emergency care, and general respiratory care.


Interfaces with attending physicians, fellow practitioners, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff among others.
