Composite Technician I

Primary Function The Composite Technician I works with new aircraft parts, using oven processes, fabricating aircraft component molds, and vacuum techniques, and maintains and repairs composite aircraft components made of fiberglass and other carbon materials. The role requires understanding Army technical manuals, drawings, and blueprints, and a working knowledge of precision tools. Essential Functions Perform lay‑up techniques that include pre‑pregs or wet lay‑up, cutting, bagging, and trimming operations or machine operations. Demonstrate an understanding of work orders, blueprints, and lay‑up charts to ensure the quality of the product. Receive detailed written instructions from the supervisor, lead technician, or an engineer. Layout, pre‑fit, assemble, and cast polyurethane and similar materials on a variety of molds and surfaces. Load and operate presses, ovens, and autoclaves, adhering to equipment requirements and the method and sequences of operation when fabricating parts using polyurethane, fiberglass, epoxy resins, and similar materials. Select tooling and materials compatible with the processing techniques identified in the work instructions. Handle regulated and hazardous wastes and materials. Work safely in a team environment, rigging, lifting, and transporting large parts and equipment. Apply production tool skills. Use computers to record data (Excel) and track time (Auto‑time). Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Work with shop tools and equipment used in composite lay‑up and assembly, and demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment. Perform casting of materials to fabricate parts and/or for repair applications using varied but generally not complex processes. Fabricate polyurethane and similar materials into sub‑assemblies for pre‑fitting before bonding. Perform complex composite lay‑up, vacuum bagging, cutting, repair, autoclave, and trimming. Verify work to ensure a defect‑free part before presenting to quality control (inspection). Read and interpret drawings and technical manuals. Qualifications Composites certification from an accredited college or one year of experience. High School Diploma / GED or equivalent required. Experience with precision tools (e.g., dial calipers, hot bonder, torque wrenches, vacuum pump, etc.). U.S. Citizen. Willing to reside in the Huntsville, AL area; relocation not provided. Must have or be capable of obtaining a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Ability to work overtime when required.
