Director of Accounting (Local San Diego Applicants Only)

Position Summary The Director of Accounting position is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the organization’s accounting. The Director of Accounting supports the VP of Finance in all accounting matters including audit preparation and delivery of necessary account schedules, and assists with ad hoc projects as they arise in the normal course of business. Essential Functions Monthly Close: Prepares end‑of‑month reconciliation, including journal entries for the month‑end and year‑end close process for all matters related to the balance sheet. Reviews and summarizes general ledger activity for balance sheet and income statement accounts. Reviews the month‑end checklist and works with the VP of Finance to ensure the list is completed and closing is timely. Manages general accounting and internal auditing for the timely dissemination of financial management reports, including internal and external monthly financial statements. Accounts Payable: Supports accounts payable to ensure timely review of payments and credit card transactions. Works closely with Purchasing to ensure compliance and timely review of purchase orders for end‑of‑year processes. Annual Audit: Prepares schedules for the annual audit and assists with audit inquiries, such as schedules for fixed assets, right‑of‑use assets, prepaid purchasing, and payroll accounts. Works with colleagues to answer audit questions regarding changes in the balance sheet. Software use: Acts as a subject‑matter expert in SAGE/Intacct, solving day‑to‑day issues and coordinating with Armanino when needed. Policy and Procedures: Stays fully informed of internal controls, policies, and procedures, providing updates and ensuring they are current and communicated throughout the JCVI community. Notifies the VP of Finance on any policy violations and implements updates or changes as directed. Fixed Assets: Oversees fixed assets, including research of government‑owned property, disposal approvals, net book value calculations, inventory management (including bi‑annual fixed‑asset inventory), property taxes, and filings. Provides fixed asset schedules needed for insurance renewals and claims. Cross‑Functional Training: Payroll. Supervision: Supervises Accountant 1 and Accounts Payable personnel. Prerequisites Bachelor’s degree in accounting; 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in biotech, research institute, or non‑profit settings. Strong experience with accounting systems (INTACCT/SAGE highly desirable) and advanced Excel skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and external contacts. Strong computer aptitude, including word processing and spreadsheet proficiency. Experience with INTACCT/Sage and ADP highly desirable. High level of discretion for confidential work and ability to handle sensitive information appropriately. Excellent organization and time‑management skills, able to handle a variety of tasks and shifting priorities. Proficiency with standard administrative procedures and strong mathematical skills. Cooperative and service‑oriented attitude; works well under pressure and maintains a professional demeanor. High level of initiative and ability to work with minimum supervision. Expert knowledge of accounting and financial principles, regulations, and best practices. Excellent understanding of governmental guidelines and tax laws affecting the company. Work Environment Moderate noise level (business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic). Ability to work in a confined area. Ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods. Remote work permitted in accordance with company policy. Physical Demands Regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard; reach, stoop, kneel to install computer equipment.
