NIH OSC Strategic Planning, Evaluation, and Engagement Fellowship

Program Overview The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of Strategic Coordination (OSC), invites applicants to an Immersive STEM Fellowship Experience designed to foster scientific exploration and professional growth. Fellows will work with NIH scientists specializing in strategic planning, evaluation, and community engagement to learn how NIH designs, evaluates, and communicates the impact of Common Fund programs. Learning Objectives Scientific Communication: develop skills in translating research findings and program outcomes into engaging written and multimedia content for diverse audiences. Web Content Development: create compelling web content that effectively communicates the goals and achievements of NIH programs. Analyzing Research Contributions: explore methods for analyzing the scientific areas advanced by Common Fund‑supported research. Community Engagement: learn strategies for outreach planning and execution to research communities. Portfolio Analysis: conduct assessments of the Common Fund research portfolio. Trend Identification: examine NIH and external research portfolios to identify workforce trends and emerging opportunities. Data Summarization: prepare materials that summarize evaluative data for diverse audiences including NIH leadership and policymakers. Develop data‑driven recommendations for shaping future initiatives. Location Fellows are expected to be fully engaged in‑person at the Bethesda, MD location. Financial Provisions Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend to offset living and other expenses. Stipend rates are determined by NIH officials and are based on the candidate’s academic and professional background. NIH may also provide a health insurance supplement to cover the monthly premium costs if you elect the ORAU/ORISE health insurance plan. Appointment Length The appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed annually up to four additional years upon recommendation and availability of funds. Selection Timing Initial review of applications will occur on July 1, 2026. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the 2026 calendar year, with selections made as projects become available. Nature of the Appointment This program is administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Participants do not become employees of NIH, DOE, ORISE, or ORAU, and there are no employment‑related benefits. Qualifications Age: 18 years or older. Education: Master’s or Doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields received within the last 60 months (5 years); current graduate students nearing degree completion may apply if they will have completed their degree by the start of the fellowship. Citizenship Requirements This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals.
