Under the clinical supervision of a licensed nurse, the PNA I: Provides emergency, health, and personal care services to patients. Interacts with patients therapeutically and documents patient conditions and behaviors in an electronic record. Participates in individualized and unit‑based programming, maintaining direct and ongoing therapeutic interactions to promote living and social skills. Provides verbal and supportive documentation concerning individual patient behaviors and progress toward recovery goals. Participates in shift reports and recovery team meetings. Assists with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence and self‑care. Accompanies patients to appointments as required. Communicates effectively with other team members to promote a positive workplace. Assists the licensed nurse in monitoring patients for medication administration or other treatments, including taking and monitoring vital signs. Promotes safety through continuous environmental awareness and positive patient engagement. Promotes classes and programs offered and encourages patient participation, co‑facilitating groups as assigned. Responds to crisis or psychiatric emergency situations, using the least restrictive intervention necessary and applying Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS) with RN supervision. Performs CPR/Heimlich techniques and uses an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) correctly and safely. Performs additional duties as assigned, including disaster response or continuity of operations activation. Essential Job Functions (EJFs) Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy. Takes an active role in implementing individualized recovery plans and offers consistent, ongoing support to help patients reach their goals. Uses therapeutic, person‑centered communication skills to engage patients promptly and effectively. Co‑facilitates groups and encourages patient participation in programs. Responds to psychiatric emergencies using TIPS and verbal de‑escalation under RN supervision. Propagates safety and reduces injury risk through continuous monitoring of the environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of patient care techniques, therapy, developmental, and patient‑centered recovery programs. Basic computer skills. Ability to read, write, and understand English to effectively communicate. Ability to administer first aid and CPR, and to conduct TIPS. Ability to work with others, accept supervision, and follow procedures. Registrations, Licensure, and Certifications Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire if transporting patients. Certifications in CPR (or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment). Initial Screening Criteria Six (6) months’ work experience in direct care. Additional Information Preferred: six months of direct care experience. Applicants must complete mandatory background checks, drug screen, and registry checks per state mandates. Must be at least 18 years of age; certain locations require 21 years. Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours may be necessary. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required; vaccination for influenza and other diseases is mandatory according to CDC guidelines.
