Position Summary At Houston Methodist, the Transporter position is responsible for transporting acute, intensive and critical care patients in a timely manner by wheelchair, transcart, stretcher or bed. This position supports the interprofessional team in delivering high quality patient care during transit. The Transporter moves inpatients and outpatients to diagnostic testing and therapeutic areas, clinics, physician's offices, admissions and discharges throughout the complex. The Transporter assists with preventing patient falls by retrieving the Hover Mat/Jack, lifting and moving the patient to a stretcher and transporting the patient back to his/her room. The role requires effective communication and close collaboration with nursing staff and co‑workers. Additional duties include delivering patient room furnishings such as bed extensions, sleep chairs, and transporting empty beds, as requested, and serving as backup when others are unavailable. Schedule & FLSA Status Shifts: 5–8 hours on 3rd shift Monday to Friday from 10:30 pm to 7:00 am. Holidays and backup call required. FLSA Status: Non‑exempt. People Essential Functions Communicates delays to Nursing, Imaging and other departments and participates as a team player with nursing, ancillary staff and coworkers to move patients to tests, treatments and procedures. Interacts positively with patients, guests, internal customers and promotes a positive image of the department and Hospital through verbal and non‑verbal communication. Maintains personal appearance guidelines and uses appropriate devices to ensure HIPAA compliance. Trains and orients new transporters and makes customer service decisions with problem‑solving, setting and communicating trip delays, canceling and recalling assignments. Contributes to department scores for turnover, retention and employee engagement on unit‑based scorecards, i.e., peer‑to‑peer accountability. Service Essential Functions Communicates to nursing to notify staff of patient transport, including reviewing patient passport for completeness, understanding handoff, checking patient identification with two‑step verification and preparing patient for transport, identifying IV bags, Foley catheters or infusion pumps needing special handling. Maintains adequate supply of transport equipment in lobbies and equipment rooms, clears equipment left on floors, in hallways and unauthorized areas by moving them to designated storage areas or reporting them to the dispatcher. Properly disposes of soiled linen on the department and/or nursing unit and removes other items left on equipment such as urinals, bedpans, emesis basins, etc. Removes equipment no longer needed for patient care and places it in the soiled utility room. Contributes to improving department scores for patient satisfaction/experience on unit‑based scorecards through peer‑to‑peer accountability and providing timely transports. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Reports observations, conditions and problems of patients to licensed personnel to achieve desired patient outcomes while ensuring privacy and safety. Disinfects equipment before and after each use, allowing sufficient time for the disinfectant to dry thoroughly. Transports and stores oxygen tanks in approved holders, ensuring selected cylinders are appropriate for use and reflect current airflow status. Completes patient handoff when returning to department. Operates all transport equipment safely, tags equipment needing extensive repairs, takes damaged equipment out of service and delivers it for repair. Reports potential harm or conflicting information to management for input in Patient Safety Net (PSN). Supports initiatives to prevent pressure injuries, patient falls and hospital‑acquired infections. Contributes to improving quality and safety scores on the unit‑based scorecard. Finance Essential Functions Uses resources efficiently, manages time effectively, prioritizes daily tasks and meets labor productivity standards, minimizing incidental overtime. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Offers innovative solutions through participation in performance improvement projects and activities. Assumes responsibility for self‑growth by participating in in‑services programs and continuing education, updating the Development plan on an ongoing basis. Qualifications Education High School diploma or equivalent education (e.g., GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post‑secondary education). Preferred. Experience One year of customer service, patient transportation or nursing aid experience preferred. Licenses & Certifications BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA – American Heart Association) within 90 days. Knowledge & Abilities Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies for safe job performance, assessed through ongoing skills, competency assessments and performance evaluations. Proficient in speaking, reading and writing English to perform essential job functions, especially activities affecting patient or employee safety or security. Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members and coworkers in a customer‑service manner using positive language principles. Shows working knowledge of stretchers, wheelchairs, mobility of IV pump or IVs and beds related to safety measures. Understands isolation, infection control and safety procedures, practicing universal precautions at all times when assisting patients.
