Working collaboratively with clinicians, investigators, and health system partners, the Precision Omics Unit facilitates genetic testing, variant interpretation, data access, and translational research, while also advancing the implementation of precision diagnostics and personalized therapeutic strategies across diverse patient populations.The Department of Neurology ranks among the top in the country by the NIH, the UCI Health SOM Department of Neurology is committed to advancing clinical care, education and research to help patients with diverse neurological conditions. The department's 40 full-time, teaching faculty members are highly experienced clinicians devoted to training the next generation of neurologists. Its clinical activities take place at UCIMC, the university campus in Irvine and at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The state-of-the-art UCIDH Hospital at UCIMC has beds for patients with neurological disorders as well as specialized units for epilepsy monitoring and neuro-intensive care.The Institute for Precision Health at the University of California, Irvine seeks a motivated and collaborative Genetic Counselor to precision medicine initiatives. This role bridges clinical genomics, data-driven healthcare delivery, and translational research, with the goal of improving appropriate use of genetic testing and advancing personalized care. The Genetic Counselor will work closely with clinicians, laboratory partners, informatics teams, and researchers to design and administer an institution wide genetic test utilization program that connect to specialty and research programs in genomics and precision health.What It Takes to be Successful:Possess excellent genetic counseling and psychosocial skills to counsel individuals and/or families in a sensitive and confidential mannerProficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentialityClear and effective communication of complex genetic information to diverse audiences (patients, providers, researchers)Written communication skills for documentation, reports, and academic outputProficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.Working knowledge of genetic testing technologies (e.g., gene panels, exome/genome sequencing, CNV analysis, repeat expansion testing)Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary teamMaster's degree from a recognized genetic counseling program or equivalent culmination of education and experienceBoard certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Medical GeneticsBoard certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling upon hireGenetic Counselor License from CaliforniaMinimum three (3) years' experience in genetic counseling (postmaster's degree), at least one of which should include administration, supervision, or major responsibilities for independent programs.Working knowledge of clinical indications for genetic testing across multiple specialties (e.g., neurogenetics, oncology, rare disease)Ability to identify opportunities for quality improvement and innovation in precision healthTotal Rewards In addition to the salary range listed below, we offer a wealth of benefits to make working at UCI even more rewarding.
