Job Description

Senior Director, Global Public Affairs, Inflammation

Reporting to the Executive Director of Global Public Affairs, Virology & Inflammation, this role will establish and drive the global communications and advocacy vision and strategy for Gilead's research and development efforts, current product portfolio, partnerships, programs, and initiatives in the emerging area of inflammation.

The role is responsible for helping to demonstrate Gilead’s leadership in the field of inflammation by articulating Gilead’s vision across external and internal audiences, raising awareness of unmet medical, systemic, and social needs that our science and programs seek to address, and communicating progress against these goals.

The Senior Director works closely with cross-functional colleagues in Global Commercial Strategy & Operations, Clinical Development, Inflammation Research, Value & Access, Medical Affairs, Government Affairs and Policy. This role will also engage colleagues across Public Affairs’ global centers of expertise and regional/country teams to help inform cross-functional priorities and drive tailored implementation at a local level.

Responsibilities include:

• Serve as a strategic Public Affairs advisor to cross-functional leadership teams, influencing therapeutic area strategy and business decisions through stakeholder insights, policy considerations, patient perspectives, and reputational assessments.

• Develop and drive a global stakeholder and communications strategy that advances awareness, access, and adoption of current and future innovations in the field of Inflammation, while supporting broader business and public health objectives.

• Partner with Value & Access, Government Affairs, Medical Affairs, and Advocacy teams to identify and address systemic barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and access.

• Shape external stakeholder understanding of emerging inflammation diseases and unmet needs through evidence-based disease education, thought leadership initiatives, and strategic partnerships.

• Lead global alignment across affiliates and cross-functional stakeholders to advance therapeutic area priorities, strengthen external reputation, and support successful development and commercialization objectives.

• Drive development of communications strategies, programs, and materials to support pipeline candidates, clinical studies in specific populations, regulatory filings, and novel educational and access-related initiatives.

• Proactively lead issues management efforts globally, including in Intercontinental Region (ICR), Global Patient Solutions (GPS) and Australia, Canada and Europe (ACE) for Inflammation.

• Shape and steward Gilead’s enterprise reputation strategy for the Inflammation therapeutic area, overseeing corporate storytelling, thought leadership, and stakeholder engagement across external and internal channels.

• Maintain an up-to-date understanding of issues relevant to Gilead’s Inflammation portfolio ensuring that talking points and key message documents are updated and disseminated among internal and external audiences in a timely, proactive manner.

• Shape stakeholder, reputation, and communications strategy for the Inflammation therapeutic area, influencing business priorities and enterprise decision-making through external insights, policy assessments, and patient perspectives.
• Lead stakeholder engagement strategy with patient advocacy organizations (in Gilead’s target inflammation disease areas and across Primary Biliary Cholangitis), professional societies, and community partners to address unmet needs, improve disease awareness, and inform development of patient-centered initiatives.

• Collaborate on programs related to Inflammation in other Public Affairs and Government Affairs centers of expertise, including corporate communications, community engagement, corporate giving, and policy. Programs may include corporate advertising, corporate website and intranet content development, advocacy group engagement, funding opportunity announcements, among others.

• Partner with the Corporate media relations team to support and maintain relationships with key top-tier and trade reporters to shape reporting on Gilead’s Inflammation product portfolio, pipeline, and approach to access.

• Manage PR agency partners, providing agency teams with appropriate information and oversight to effectively implement programs in compliance with Gilead’s business conduct policies

• Manage the submission, review, and approval of all materials through Gilead’s Global review committee process

• Manage budgets to target, ensuring appropriate investment in priority work and identifying ways to optimize resources

Basic Qualifications :

Bachelor's Degree and Fourteen Years' Experience

OR

Masters' Degree and Twelve Years' Experience

OR

PhD and Twelve Years' Experience

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

• A degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field which includes 10+ years of healthcare public relations.
• Education and experience in managing public health issues strongly preferred.
• Exceptional strategic communications, storytelling, and writing skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific, policy, access, and research concepts into compelling narratives that influence diverse stakeholder audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to anticipate, assess, and manage reputational, policy, and business issues in a highly regulated environment, applying sound judgment during complex and high-visibility situations.
• Proven ability to develop stakeholder engagement and reputation strategies that advance business objectives, strengthen organizational credibility, and drive meaningful impact for patients and healthcare communities.
• Proven ability to lead through influence across highly matrixed global organizations, aligning diverse stakeholders and functions around shared business and Public Affairs objectives.
• Prior experience and a passion for Virology or Inflammation is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and drive strategic decisions through expert counsel, stakeholder insights, and communication expertise.
• Ability to influence others and drive alignment across diverse teams including both in different functions and geographies.
• A passion for engaging in public health and policy issues.
• Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company

The salary range for this position is: $243,100.00 - $314,600.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
