Our organization is actively looking for a highly skilled and experienced Physician or an outstanding PhD Researcher (with a clinical collaborator) to take on the position of System Chief for the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine.

The perfect candidate will exhibit strong leadership capabilities and a commitment to enhancing clinical and translational research, particularly through NIH funding. The Department of Medicine at our organization secures around $154 million from the NIH to support innovative research across 14 divisions.

Reporting directly to the System Chair of the Department of Medicine, the System Chief will oversee approximately 85 full-time and part-time faculty members, along with 22 voluntary physicians throughout the organization. The role encompasses administrative, clinical, research, and educational responsibilities, with a deep understanding of the Division's unique contribution to medical education and its ties to the community. The System Chief will also be aware of the changing healthcare landscape and its implications for service delivery at academic medical institutions, including off-campus outpatient facilities under our organization.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the System Chief of Infectious Diseases include, but are not limited to:

• Comprehensive management of the System Division of Infectious Diseases across various locations, including Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Downtown/Union Square, Mount Sinai Morningside, and Mount Sinai West, as well as off-campus outpatient sites. This involves creating an academically focused training program, expanding both inpatient and outpatient clinical services, and enhancing basic, clinical, and translational research initiatives. Additional expectations include ensuring financial sustainability and elevating the clinical and scientific reputation of the Division. Site Chiefs across the organization will report to the System Chief, in addition to the respective Site Chair of Medicine.
• Overseeing all educational activities within the Division for medical students, postdoctoral trainees, and continuing medical education. The educational framework should encompass bedside training, didactic sessions, conference preparations, and a comprehensive written core curriculum.
• Establishing and maintaining fellowship training programs that meet ABIM and Residency Review Committee standards in anticipation of future evaluations. This includes ensuring an adequate patient volume, both inpatient and outpatient experiences, teaching, research, and regular assessments of trainees. The Directors of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program will report to the System Division Chief.
• Expanding the NIH-funded research initiatives, including leadership in program project or Center Grant applications, successfully competing for NIH training grants, and fostering the development of K (mentored) awardees.
• Supporting the professional growth of junior faculty through mentorship and exemplary leadership.
• Enhancing both inpatient and outpatient clinical services, including faculty practices and off-site locations.
• Ensuring high-quality care across inpatient services, outpatient medical clinics, and faculty practices.
• Managing physician coverage, teaching responsibilities, and organizational aspects of the Division's clinic.
• Formulating strategic plans for the Division of Infectious Diseases that align with departmental and institutional objectives.

Qualifications

• Applicants must possess an MD or MD/PhD, or be a highly qualified PhD.
• Eligibility for a New York medical license and board certification or eligibility in Infectious Diseases is required.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in academic medicine, clinical practice, or professional organizations is essential.
• National recognition in clinical, translational, and/or basic research is necessary.
• Candidates should have the experience and leadership qualities to articulate a vision for sustaining and expanding all aspects of the division's mission while fostering a collaborative work environment.
• High character and a consistent, exemplary leadership style are essential.
• Ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, embrace differences, lead across various organizational levels, build diverse networks, and treat all individuals fairly and equitably.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work harmoniously within a diverse academic and clinical setting are required.

• Willingness to engage broadly within the community as an institutional leader and serve as a visible ambassador for the division, department, and school of medicine, both locally and nationally.
• Strong leadership and management abilities, with a proven track record of managing multiple complex programs simultaneously.
• Excellent judgment, independent thinking, communication skills, and sound political acumen are highly valued.
• A successful history of recruiting and developing faculty, trainees, and students.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is between $350,000 and $500,000 (excluding bonuses, incentive compensation, or benefits).
