Position Title Registered Veterinary Technician Position Control Number 998379 Type of Position Staff, Full-time Campus Western University Campus - Pomona, CA Position Location California Department 1701-College of Veterinary Medicine Job Summary To support clinical teaching and service in the curriculum and public practice of the College of Veterinary Medicine Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to read and write medical records and recommendations. Ability to calculate client’s bills, drug dosages, and dilutions. Ability to teach students in technical skills and supervise veterinary students, ensuring student and animal safety; fairly evaluate and document students’ clinical/surgical skills. Ability to restrain, handle, and perform a physical exam on a variety of animal species. Broad species experience is desirable. Knowledge and enthusiasm for small animal preventative care recommendations (nutrition, dentistry, behavior, immunizations), veterinary medical terminology, procedures, surgical nursing, and basic sanitation and upkeep of veterinary medical equipment and environments. Ability to perform a variety of basic veterinary office procedures. Logical, independent problem solving skills with attention to detail and process. Effective interaction with administration, faculty, staff, students, clients, and outside visitors/vendors. Computer proficiency (Internet searches, Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Demonstrated leadership. Experience as a Lead Primary RVT at one rotation site or prior lead position. Ability to train new RVT staff at all RVT levels. Required Qualifications Education: Completion of a degree from RVT school. RVT License in the State of California. Experience: Entry level, no experience necessary or up to 5 years of experience in general practice. Valid California Driver’s License required for travel to off‑site locations. Preferred Qualifications Education: Completion of internship/externship while in RVT school. Key Responsibilities Participate in teaching veterinary clinical and surgical skills to students in wellness rotations, clinical skills laboratories, and advanced courses. Develop and implement clinical services, performing technical and non‑technical duties typical of a registered veterinary technician in the Pet Health Clinic, VACS I and VACS II, and course settings; including driving a mobile vet vehicle when required. Assist with client service and patient care during courses, rotations, and public practice. Support faculty with technical and non‑technical tasks, administrative needs, preparation, and planning for courses, rotations, and public practice. Assist with cleaning, disinfecting for infection control, and organization of the CVM facilities where rotations, courses, and public practice occur. Participate in the production and implementation of the clinical skills curriculum, including preparation and oversight of pet volunteers, laboratory setup and cleanup, inventory and equipment management. Act as an expert resource for tasks typically performed by a Registered Veterinary Technician. Participate in veterinary and education research as needed by the College of Veterinary Medicine. Perform other technical and non‑technical duties as required. Work Schedule Hours may vary and may include overtime, evenings, and weekends. Physical Demands Essential functions require frequent use of hands, speaking, hearing, standing, walking, climbing stairs, and reaching. Occasionally sitting, stooping, bending, kneeling, and operating a motor vehicle. May lift and/or move dogs and cats up to 50 pounds and occasionally restrain dogs over 100 pounds. Group‑lifting or moving animals or equipment up to 100 pounds may also be required. Adequate vision for safe operation of a motor vehicle and day‑to‑day tasks is necessary. Work Environment Work is normally performed in veterinary clinic, hospital, laboratory, or animal shelter settings. Exposure to animals, anesthetic gases, cleaning solutions, pharmacological drugs, and outdoor weather conditions occurs. Noise levels are moderate. Moderate exposure to toxic chemicals, fumes, and occasional risk of electrical shock and radiation. The environment includes exposure to students, faculty, staff, clients, and outside visitors.
