Summary This position is assigned to Engineering Service within Eastern Oklahoma VA Healthcare System at the Ernest Childers OPC located in Tulsa, Ok. The Industrial Equipment Mechanic performs various installing, repairing, overhauling, aligning, modifying, relocating, and maintaining of various types of automated equipment, and systems that have complex interrelationships among components. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to: Utilizing a thorough knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic system/component characteristics of diverse industrial support machinery and other equipment, as well as electric and gas welding methods and trade practices, the position is established to install, align, repair, maintain, and overhaul non-production industrial machinery and equipment; modify, repair, assemble and weld metals/alloys; fabricate, repair, assemble and install sheet metal parts, items and assemblies. Determines nature and extent of necessary repairs, and makes them by replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts and components; rivets, solders, and spot welds for appearance and strength. Reassembles and installs equipment, performsoperational and functional tests making required adjustments to ensure proper system operations. Installs, replaces, adjusts and sets various regulating or safety devices such as meters, gauges, and governors. Lays out, installs, aligns, repairs, overhauls, and maintains various types of non production industrial type machinery, equipment, and systems. Disassembles and repairs general industrial type machinery, equipment, and systems, such as conveyor systems, air compressors, laundry equipment, etc. Knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic operating characteristics of varied non-production industrial machinery, equipment, and system; familiarity with varied metals required to accomplish maintenance and repair assignments; operating characteristics, installation and repair procedures, methods, and trade practices. Ability to troubleshoot industrial machinery, equipment and systems to determine required repairs, needed parts or materials, and estimate time required to complete repairs; disassemble, repair, and rebuild component parts of industrial machinery, equipment andsystems such as conveyor systems. pulleys, reduction gears, monorails, and pumps; dismantle, move, relocate or install various types of machinery, equipment, or systems; anchor machinery to foundations, assemble and connect accessory or auxiliary components such as steel ladders, platforms, and guard rails; make precision alignments or adjustments for balance; and conduct operational lest of system. Ability to weld material parts and structures that vary in size, shape, and thickness, requiring multiple welding passes or dissimilar metals such as copper to steel. Ability to interpret and apply technical manual, shop directives, blueprints, and other document requirements in determining critical dimensions or key reference points. Work assignments are made through work orders, trouble or service calls or maintenance schedules accompanied by rough sketches, engineering drawings or specifications, blueprints, other technical information or regulatory codes. Works under general supervision of General Maintenance Foreman who makes oral or written assignments with general or specific instructions for unusual situations and/or procedural changes in established practices; incumbent allowed discretion to prioritize assignments to efficiently and effectively accomplish work. Skill in use of complicated shop tools, equipment, measuring instruments and hand measuring devices such as hand power crimping, burring, turning or beading machines, soldering or welding equipment, protractors, calipers, and screw pitch gauges. Ability to install and repair complex industrial machinery, equipment and systems such as engraving machines, reducing valves, pneumatic tube systems, laundry, and medical and dietetic equipment. Skill in use and application of standard formulas, shop mathematics, trade theories and practices in calculating needed materials and problem solving; use of various test equipment and measuring tools, such as alignment scopes, micrometers, precision levels, transits, bearing bridge gauges, flow meters, and vibration analyzers. Skill in setting up and operating machine tools like small lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and precision grinders to manufacture component parts or machine existing bushings, bearings, seals, couplings, and pistons; skill in use of machine tools for on-site milling, grinding, boring, facing, and drilling to accomplish repairs. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Troubleshooting Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work requires light to moderately heavy physical effort (10-60 lbs) while lifting, pushing, bending, crawling, transporting, carrying, pulling, moving, handling, or setting up ladders, scaffolding, materials, tools and equipment. Repairs, installations and maintenance work require kneeling, crouching, stooping, bending, climbing, walking and standing for long periods. Works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, or hard to reach places requiring climbing ladders, reaching over and under while in cramped, awkward, tiring or uncomfortable positions. Uses hand, eye, leg and body coordination while performing, assigned task. Working Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors subject to extremes of weather. Exposed to dust, dirt, smoke and grease, unpleasant odors from fumes, infrared and ultraviolent radiation, flying sparks, torch glares, heat and heated materials. Some work may be performed in well lighted, heated and ventilated offices and shops. Subject to potential abrasions, strains, scrapes, bums, eye injury, electrical shock, bruises, broken bones, cuts or injury from falls and slips. May be required to wear protective equipment or clothing, exposed to discomfort of wearing protective clothing, gloves, flash shield or eye goggles. The incumbent is exposed to the hazards present in a normal hospital environment. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
