Pharmacy Technician- Inpatient

Job Title

Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) Medication Management

Major duties include but are not limited to:

• Communicates to CBOCs via email/leaf portal regarding medication requests.
• Reviews patient profiles to ensure active order(s) and provides medications/vaccines needed to a pharmacist for final check prior to dispensing.
• Reviews OmniCell inventory reports for CBOCs and prepares medications/vaccines needed for pharmacist final check prior to dispensing.
• Delivers medications via government vehicle to CBOCs via daily scheduled trips.
• Performs monthly ward inspections for all CBOCs. Provides reports to the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor.
• Maintains active and valid drivers license and continuously meets VA criteria required to utilize a government vehicle.

Inpatient Medication Management

• Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data electronically or via the Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order. After a final check by a pharmacist, dispenses medication in a clinic, ambulatory care, dispensing window or discharge situations.
• After prescription/order(s) are reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews orders for technical accuracy and converts the order, if necessary, so that the item dispensed corresponds to the drug and dose ordered.
• Prepares medications that require special handling and documentation.
• Properly handles medications by ensuring high alert, hazardous, refrigerated and controlled substance medications are handled/stored appropriately and legally.
• Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention.

General Duties

• Completes all other duties assigned by supervisor. This may include, but is not limited to, any functions of technicians at a lower performance level.
• Provides pharmacy phone support with other departments and patients.
• Will maintain the medication storage areas for compliance in drug outdates for the correct storage of medication as per the Joint Commission requirements.

Work Schedule: Full Time Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
