Training Coordinator
Unruled Masses
Unruled Masses (UM) is a New York-based 501(c)(3), nonpartisan, public education and civic empowerment organization. Our mission is to research and expose abuses of power by public and private entities, educate the public on corruption and related harms, empower people to counter corruption through nonviolent and lawful civic action, and inspire hope through community.
We believe democracy is non-negotiable. We will never yield to authoritarian interests or abuses of power that violate democratic principles and harm our communities. Our mantra is “hope lives in those who fight for a better tomorrow” and we endure to fight against the divide and conquer tactics that abusers deploy that results in hopelessness. UM exists to counter that by showing people that when they stand together and recognize their own agency, they can confront those who harm their communities and create change.
Who You Are
You are a natural teacher and organizer who believes that people act when they feel informed, capable, and supported by a community. You understand that most people already sense that something is wrong; what they often lack is a clear understanding of how corruption touches their daily lives and a practical, safe way to respond. You don't need to be a lifelong activist. You need to be a creative, well-organized builder of learning experiences who can turn our corruption research and civic action tools into trainings that ordinary people want to attend, remember, and act on.
You care deeply about democracy and are driven by the belief that public institutions must be accountable always, and only, to the people. You are energetic, resourceful, and comfortable bringing together people, places, and partners. You are also someone who can stand in front of a room, whether in person or online, and make a complex subject feel clear, relevant, and even enjoyable. You will help build the Community Action Trainings that move people from awareness, to confidence, to action.
What You'll Do as a Training Coordinator
- Plan the Events: Work with our Events Manager to find venues, prepare events, and design the training concepts for UM's Community Action Trainings, which teach individuals and communities how to recognize specific types of corruption and take nonviolent, lawful civic action in response.
- Build the Curriculum: Develop the training syllabi and curriculum used at every event. Work with our Corruption Research Program to build the research component, so attendees learn about specific abuses of power and how they affect people at the community level, drawing on our Abuse Library and Corruption Intelligence File.
- Match Training to Action: Work with the Civic Action Research team to identify the most appropriate nonviolent and lawful civic actions people can take to counter each type of abuse, drawing on our Action Playbooks and other civic action products, and weave them into the training.
- Create the Presentation Materials: Build the slide decks, facilitator guides, and other presentation materials used to deliver each training, in plain language and consistent with UM's accessibility standards.
- Conduct Surveys : Create and administer during training surveys to gather feedback from attendees on how effective they felt the training was and if they feel equipped to engage in civic action.
- Develop Handouts and Event Materials: Work with our creative team to design the handouts, take-home guides, and other materials attendees receive at events.
- Design In-Person and Virtual Trainings: Build both in-person events and online versions of our trainings. Bring a creative mind to the concepts so trainings are educational, insightful, and as engaging and entertaining as possible, so attendees come back for more, bring their friends, and help spread the word.
- Secure Venues and Community Spaces: Work together with our events manager to conduct outreach to libraries, community centers, and other gathering places to build relationships and secure accessible space for training events.
- Grow Attendance: Develop and carry out strategies to bring the right number of people to each event, reaching ordinary people who want to protect themselves and their communities from the harms of corruption.
- Partner on Delivery: Connect with current and prospective partners in the civic action space to co-deliver trainings, with a UM trainer and a trainer from a partner organization leading together, in support of our work to strengthen partner coalitions.
- Measure Our Impact: Design and prepare attendee surveys, collect and analyze feedback, and track the numbers that show whether our trainings are working: how many trainings we deliver, how many people we train, how well attendees understand corruption and civic action, how confident they feel, and how many go on to take civic action.
- Deliver the Training: Ideal candidates will also lead trainings themselves, engaging directly with the community and delivering the content you helped build.
Exceptional volunteers may:
- Lead a regional or multi-city series of Community Action Trainings and help build a repeatable model other volunteers can run.
- Train and mentor new volunteer facilitators, helping UM build the pool of trainers it needs.
- Help develop college campus chapters by adapting trainings for student audiences.
- Help develop training courses for the future Civic Materials Exchange and online versions of in-person trainings.
- Collaborate with our communications team to promote events and to share training insights on the Unruled Voices podcast.
- Act as a subject matter expert during partner coalition sessions and co-hosted events.
Training Areas of Interest
We are looking for coordinators who can help us deliver across our core themes: Corruption Literacy; Nonviolent Tactics & Civic Action; Community Organizing; Institutional Accountability; and Partnership & Coalition Building.
Ideal Qualifications
- Training and Facilitation Experience: Experience designing or delivering workshops, trainings, classes, or community presentations, in person or online, for adult and child audiences.
- Event Planning and Outreach: Comfort planning events, securing venues, and building relationships with community centers, libraries, and local organizations.
- Instructional Design: Ability to turn research into a clear learning path with objectives, activities, handouts, and slides that people can follow and remember.
- Creativity and Audience Engagement: A creative mind for making serious subjects engaging, so people leave informed, encouraged, and eager to return.
- Measurement Mindset: Comfort designing surveys, tracking attendance and feedback, and using data to improve future trainings.
- Clarity of Expression: Strong, plain-language communication skills, written and spoken, consistent with UM's commitment to accessibility.
- Collaboration: Ability to work across teams, including events, research, and civic action, and with outside partner organizations.
- Mission Alignment: A demonstrated, nonpartisan commitment to democracy, human rights, and the belief that organized, peaceful communities can hold power accountable.
Compensation & Commitment
This is an unpaid volunteer role. We are flexible on time but ask for at least 4–6 hours a week, with additional time in the weeks leading up to a scheduled training. As we grow our 501(c)(3) funding, paid leadership positions or staff roles may be offered to volunteers who demonstrate exceptional dedication and impact.
Benefits of Volunteering with Unruled Masses
- Shape the Training Experience: Design the Community Action Trainings that give ordinary people the knowledge, tools, and confidence to take effective, peaceful civic action.
- Founding Team Status: Work directly with UM leadership to build a nonpartisan, public-interest research and civic action organization from the ground up.
- Professional Growth: Build real-world experience in curriculum design, event management, facilitation, partnership building, and program measurement.
Transformative Impact: Play a direct role in moving people from isolation and hopelessness into organized, hopeful, and effective collective action.
