Associate Real Estate Attorney

Job Type: Full-time, Exempt Salary Range: $130,000 – $150,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications Reports to: General Counsel Company Overview: BDC is a privately held, entrepreneurial real estate investment and development company focused on acquiring, developing, and managing retail shopping centers and multifamily properties across California and beyond. In addition to our established retail portfolio, BDC is expanding into the multifamily sector through recent acquisitions and new ground-up development projects. Position Summary: We are seeking an Associate In-House Real Estate Attorney to join our in-house legal department at our Walnut Creek headquarters. This is a high-impact, hands-on role that works directly with the General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, senior management in other departments and cross-functional business units. The Associate Attorney will support a range of transactional and operational legal matters related to BDC’s real estate development, acquisition, leasing, financing, property management, and entity governance activities. This role offers daily exposure to executive leadership and potential for long-term advancement within the legal department. We are looking for someone who thrives in a team-oriented, busy environment and can build strong working relationships across departments. This is a full-time, exempt position with regular in-office business hours from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required based on business needs. Key Responsibilities: Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial real estate documents, including: Purchase and sale agreements Retail leases Reciprocal easement agreements Entity formation and governance documents Partnership agreements Oversee legal due diligence for acquisitions and development projects, including: Reviewing title reports, surveys, CC&Rs, parcel maps, and lease abstracts Coordinating with title companies, escrow officers, and third-party consultants Manage legal aspects of entity compliance and governance for BDC and its affiliates Support litigation management and interface with outside counsel as needed Prepare internal reports summarizing transaction milestones, issues, and lessons learned Advise company departments (e.g., leasing, property management, development, and accounting) on a wide range of legal issues affecting owned and pending properties. Qualifications: Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school, MBA a plus Active member in good standing of the California State Bar 1–4 years of experience practicing real estate law (law firm or in-house experience preferred) Demonstrated interest in real estate and transactional law Strong legal writing, analytical, and communication skills Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and often high-pressure environment Collaborative, detail-oriented, and proactive Humble, team-oriented mindset with a willingness to pitch in beyond strictly defined legal duties Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat Willingness to work extended hours when needed to meet critical deadlines Workplace & Culture: BDC is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
