PostgreSQL DBA

PostgreSQL DBA

PostgreSQL DBA roles and responsibilities include creating objects in the database, such as triggers and indexes. They monitor the performance of the database to ensure optimum performance, identify potential issues to solve them early, and maintain backups and perform disaster recovery in case of a disaster. They also monitor security to prevent unauthorized access, schedule consistent maintenance on the server, maintain the database schema, manage database availability, perform performance tuning, give best practice guidance to the development team, resolve any production data issues, manage tablespace, manage role, develop automation technologies to accelerate the process of data loading, develop relational databases, ensure data integrity, manage user access and permissions by adding and removing users as required, and maintain the database using different utilities such as pg_ctl and psql.

Senior position with 5+ years of experience supporting Postgres in an enterprise environment. Healthcare experience is not a must, but a plus. The one key thing is that the person needs to be an infrastructure DBA, not a developer. Infrastructure DBAs maintain the system, help optimize, ensure backups, DR processes, etc. They do not write any code like a developer.

The top three skills considered essential are supporting Postgres in a large scale environment with 10+TB databases, knowledge of management tools necessary to support and monitor the environment, and knowledge of how Postgres operates on Red Hat Linux to most effectively configure the system for performance. All should have 5+ years of experience. Knowledge of other database technologies such as MSSQL and MySQL would be a huge plus.
